Week 23 - Challenger (€127,000) - Aegon Surbiton Trophy, Great Britain - grass

Simply can't fathom this infuriatingly widespread mawkish dismay at the Evans vs Ward draw. If I'd had to pick first rounds, that would most likely have been the one I'd have wanted.

James would have lost to any of the other 31 players in the draw, so no need to consider the difficulty of opponent from his perspective. If anything playing a grass court shrewdie will help him get up to speed more swiftly.

Evo could have been susceptible to being caught cold if he was up against someone who actually stood a chance against him. Therefore it was ideal to get a gimme like this to ease him in.

Win win.

Well, if you're certain that James would indeed have lost to any other player in the draw.

I have no idea what James level really is just now. Maybe someone who saw their match there or streamed might have more thoughts.

Personally I think a comeback on grass isn't a good idea. I can see why James wanted to financially and also profile but long term I'm not so sure.

There were significant amounts of rain overnight in Teddington, just three miles away from Surbiton. The grass in my garden is very wet.  I'm really not sure that play on courts that were not covered will be possible today, even with the bright and clear weather we have now. Plus according to the Beeb,  there is a possibility of showers at lunch time.  We'll just have to watch RG instead!

If anyone has been confused/disappointed by the link to the Surbiton website from the ATP Live scope app, I've figured out what the problem is!  somebody somewhere has fat fingers.  The correct address is :   https://www.lta.org.uk/aegonsurbitontrophy    Unfortunately, in terms of news re. start of play  etc, it is about as helpful as the incorrect address.

From twitter
Surbiton R & F Club @SurbitonRFC

The rain has got us again... delayed start this morning. Most likely play not before midday.

Looks like they will play / try to play q's and semis tomorrow. Dustin Brown beat Bhambri in 3 sets yesterday so will play Dan next - should be a good one to watch

So I see.  For some reason, I'm finding it difficult to keep track of the results in this tournament.  confuse

QF:  (WC/1) Dan Evans WR 55 vs (5) Dustin Brown (GER) WR 76 (CH = 64 last October)

It's the rain! Plus the election - it all numbs the brain I find!

As an aside, it looks like we are now governed by the....DUP....mmmm
