*****

L16:  (WC/1) Dan Evans WR 55 vs (Q) Akira Santillan (JPN) WR 172 (= CH)

L16:  Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) WR 123 (CH = 31 in September 2010) vs (WC) Cameron Norrie WR 243

There's a bit of a gap between Evo & the next seed left in the draw, Dustin Brown (5):  Baggy (2) went out to Dudi Sela in straight sets earlier, while Daniil Medvedev (3) withdrew for "personal reasons".  The Aussie lucky loser who took his place, Andrew Whittington, made the most of his opportunity, proceeding to beat Reilly Opelka in three sets.

Andrew Whittington did come through but against Taylor Fritz 7-5 in the 3rd, which many would say was an even greater achievement.  Reilly Opelka beat Matt Ebden,  also in 3 sets.  Whittington will play Opelka in R2.

Whoops, so he will!    I clearly took my eye off the ball there!  Actually, I was interrupted by a telephone call & clicked on "submit" without checking properly what I'd just typed!

Looks decent effort by Jay. He could do with challenger qualifying next week to increase his chances of matches and wins, being a bit short of both for a little while since the Davis Cup fall and moving up to challengers.

Can someone explain Cam's status for me, when can he play tennis properly or is he still at College drinking red cups?

Very easily. He's now finished with college and this grass season starts his full time pro career.

This is great news. I think he could have top 100 potential.

Yes. I know we tend to get over-excited, over not a great deal, but his path so far (given his college commitments) has been excellent.

I was amazed by his speed yesterday, and anticipation - the shots weren't bad either ! It wasn't based on very long but all the same.....

Just to add to the excitement, Cam is now a break up on Stakhovsky as well at *4-3

Hope to hell I haven't jinxed him.

Evo's match suspended due to rain. I am shocked to see groundsmen using a squeejy on grass courts and no covers in evidence. This is obviously why there was no play yesterday.  Could the LTA not manage to drive a few covers down from Roehampton or Wimbledon?!

Bizarre.  And using a squeejy on a damp grass court? Really??!!

Yes, they don't appear to be covering themselves in glory. That seemed amazing what CD previouly said about wet covers left on the Centre Court for some considerable time when it was dry and very breezy. It didn't seem like rocket science that the covers were much better off ( could be replaced again if rain came ).

Groundsmen are taking the nets down - no more play today.
