Why has Ward been given a wild card? I'm confused, at least give to to players that are actively playing.

... or been top 100 within the last two years, contributed probably vitally to Davis Cup success and has been out for over 8 months after surgery to sort out some ongoing problems and needs reasonably high level matches at the start of the grass season.

Surely really not much reason for confusion.

I'd understand the argument of only giving wildcards to benefit British players if we selected tournament levels that benefited British players. How many British players has a 127000 really helped? Putting on 4/5 42500 events would be a lot more beneficial than 100k plus ones IMO.

I assume that he does have a PR but it will be well below the WR 151 of the last direct entrant since he had fallen out of the top 200 before he last played on the tour last September.

Exactly this. Given there are plenty ATP grass warm up events there should really be a spread. The lack of tournaments year round is concerning. These big challengers will be loaded and therefore almost no benefit to those ranked outside the top 300 as the results so far have shown on both men's and women's sides.

You would have to be a complete moron to use up a PR to enter qualifying when you could take a wild card into the main draw.

The cut off for Surbiton would be too high??

The shame this highlights was the fact that there was not a more deserving candidate for a WC. Broady and Glasspool have been in poor form for well over a year and face tough questions about their future in the sport at the end of this year, Marcus Willis is a part time player.

Or maybe it's that one of GB's best-loved players - a hero of several Davis Cup ties - is coming back from injury, and people would like to see him get a chance to do well. Affection and gratitude for someone who has given a great deal and who reached a high level through hard graft (his and his family's) and merit isn't necessarily a bad thing, is it?

I just wish he had a better draw ....

CD is right about the weather! I'm just the other side of the river to Surbiton, it is truly horrible here - it has been blowing a gale and raining hard for a couple of hours, and it doesn't look like it will stop any time soon. The chances of any play today must be extremely small.
