Weeks 22-23 - Roland-Garros, France - clay

R4: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 beat Karen Khachanov (RUS) WR 53 6-3 6-4 6-4

QF: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 vs (8) Kei Nishikori (JPN) WR 9

H2H is 9-2 to Andy. Andy won their only clay meeting 6-3 6-4 in the 2015 Madrid Masters. Their last meeting was a 3 set win for Andy in the Tour Final group stages, this after Kei won 7-5 in the 5th in last year's US Open QF.

Wow having initially been sceptical that Mr Murray would overcome Del Potro I am now really really excited about his draw to the finals. Roll on Wednesday and fingers crossed Nishikori reproduces his form of the first set vs verdasco today.

Bah, having beaten Kyle in 5 sets in two minutes short of four hours Kevin Anderson next retires 6-3 3-0 down to Cilic.

He seems a very nice guy and has had injury problems so if this is some recurrence then that is a pity. Still should have given Kyle a go !

Wawrinka beats Monfils 7-5 7-6(7) 6-2

Come the main event the big boys have come out to play with 7 of the top 8 seeds reaching the QF. And Raonic reached the last 16 before losing to Carreno Busta.

Quarter Finals :

(1) Murray vs (8) Nishikori
(3) Wawrinka vs (7) Cilic
(20) Carreno Busta vs (4) Nadal
(6) Thiem vs (2) Djokovic

Which gives you 2 Spaniards, 1 Brit, 1 Swiss, 1 Japanese, 1 Austrian, 1 Serb and 1 Croatian.

Or 7 Europeans and 1 non-European.

With 4 over 30 years old, and 4 under 30. Ranging from 23 to 32.

With an average age of 28 1/4

I see the FO have achieved their normal scheduling excellence tomorrow putting the two mens matches on at the same time.

Well played Mr Murray today, one of his less stressful matches albeit against a less experienced opponent. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but he does seem to be getting more of his zing back.

Surprised that Carreno Busta vs Nadal is the one on Chatrier. Maybe its patrons have other things to do and the Thiem vs Djokovic match might go on a while.

And they do love Rafa.

When I went to RG in 2015 they did that as well, worked in my favour as Novak was on Lenglen and Andy on Chatrier and the queue was bigger for Novak, about 3 times as long. Eventually got in and it was half empty despite initial allocation being sold out. Scheduling and ticketing is really a mystery, don't think I've seen any matches this year on television evidence any more than 3/4 full. Saw Andy then Mladenovic and the crowd still didn't get bigger for her. A home player playing a Slam to half empty court. Very odd system.

The policy then was you had to buy tickets at least 24 hrs before, even if you were going for the evening ticket where you are not guaranteed access to any court. Remember seeing loads of tourists in particilar being turned away. Result being empty stands.

Ticketing issues at RG. Don't go there please. It will bring back my nightmares.

I'll wire 100 to the offshore bank account of whoever can tell me first what the only Grand Slam match that Andy has lost from two sets to love up is.

Some great ties coming up. My predictions

Thiem-Park will take out Novak in 4 sets

Nadal to take out that token spaniard in 3 sets

Cilic to take out Fat Stan in 4 sets

Murray to take out pokemon in 4 sets including a bagel.
