Weeks 22-23 - Roland-Garros, France - clay

Interesting. Really one can't lose with that match. From a GB perspective, clearly it would be most desirable to see Kyle Edmund win. But if, for any reason, he didn't, I can't think of many 'other' players I'd be as happy to see advance as the returning Kevin Anderson.

NB: Live rankings put KE at 41 at present ... with potential to move into 30s with one more win.

Got to agree with this statement, KA is one of the good guys on the tour and he has had some fairly rough draws as he works his way back up after the injury problems that derailed him last year.  I always felt that he was the best pure tennis player of the big guys and his movement and shot selection were far more pleasing than the typical serve volley tactics of his fellow "big men".

Yes. One more win would take Kyle tantalizingly close to a seeding at Wimbledon.  A couple of withdrawals from the Top 32 and he might just sneak in.

Though one more win here would add a further 90 points, Kyle does have 90 ( net 80 ) points to come off from last year's Queen's QF. So he will certainly need more than 'just' one further win here and / or at Queen's or he's going to be only 10 points up on his current live total and well short of a Wimbledon seeding. He doesn't appear to be competing in the week after R-G.

Just keep winning, mate !

My memory is clearly suffering with old age. I thought the seedings for Wimbledon were always announced during Queens week i.e before Kyle's 90 points come off.  Back to the drawing board for me then.

Which is 3 days after Queens finishes.  disbelief

Ho hum.  I'll leave it to the experts next time.

Don't worry, BiS. I'd seen the Queen's QF. But I was thinking along the same lines anyway ... that's why I wrote what I did. We can still hope.

Yes, the seeds will be the top 32 still entered based on the 26/06 rankings.

On the men's side these 32 are then given a little shake around by adding on the grass adjustment to their ranking points.

Still not getting that excited by Edmund, his massive forehand can blow away these challenger level players off the court like today, but he still needs to develop. His record is 16-4 against top 20 players.

I assume you mean won 4, lost 16. How criminal, send him to the challengers  no  ( yes, great if it was better, but c'mon, you are talking about against top 20 players ... ) - though he would need special dispensation as long as he is a top 50 player.

The various different goalpost positions taken up by a select few regarding both Kyle and Aljaz are getting quite entertaining if very rarely logical.

I do agree though that he still needs to develop in a number of areas, I can't imagine many would disagree. I see noone claiming that he is near the finished article.

I can't follow the logic of he keeps winning against challenger level players so he is a challenger level player. Kyle won't get better blowing away players outside the top 100 with his forehand every week, he needs to be pushed to get better by playing against and sometimes getting exposed by top 20 players. The struggles and losses now are what should give him the tools to get better and force him to add to his game so he can compete toe to toe with the top guys. Other than the truly exceptional players everybody struggles to adjust with each step up the ladder they take, even wonderkid Sascha Zverev was demolished by Andy at the Austalian Open last year and I am sure he learned a whole lot from it.

4 top 20 wins (and some close matches) out of 20 matches isn't exactly a poor record for a 22 year old with a career high of 40. Of course he needs to develop further, just needs another year (if that) to make the next step up.

(Much more eloquently put by previous posters !)

Well, of course a guy who is ranked 50 or so will not have too many wins against top 20 players. Otherwise he'd be top 20 himself.

Kyle is the fourth youngest guy in the top 50.

The fourth youngest !

Also bear in mind that eight of those losses were against top five players, and another was against Nadal! Those guys simply don't lose that often against players outside the top 20.

I think Kyle's progressing nicely. Clearly he can add some weapons to his game. He doesn't want to be too one dimensional, as it makes it easier to neutralise his weapons. But he is still very young in the context of today's game.
