Congrats to Suzy and I'm delighted she proved me wrong! Sad though that Em did too, though she does not seem to like indoor conditions.. But its great for Suzy to make the main draw and bag the 5 points for getting there. It does indeed begin to justify more her step up to this kind of level!
R1: LARKIN, Suzy (GBR) (Q) 656 lost to JAKSIC, Jovana (SRB) [7] 282 CH=102 2014 6-4 7-5
That's a very decent score.
Never seen Suzy play and I know paulisi says she's got a rather 'light' game that doesn't really cut it at this level but that's the joy of sport (and especially an individual one like tennis) - it's reasonably small margins and a slightly better run of form, and/or a bit more confidence, and/or a draw against someone who is a good match-up for your game, and decent results can come out of nowhere.
It'll be a new CH for Suzy (somewhere nearing 600) and, for someone who was not even doing pro-tennis 18 months or so ago, she's done very well.
She steadily put building blocks in place in her Turkey and Egypt 10Ks and 15Ks. And with myself and others saying it would be good to see her spread her wings she couldn't have spread them much further than to her recent Chinese tournaments. Good to see her now getting some success on top of the experience.
I believe Suzy does coaching and was wondering if this was her main reason for being in China. She seems to stay in the same country for a few months at a time. Sure I read an article about her coaching and being on a roster somewhere. Nice way to boost the profile by being top 500 competitive as well.
Good point. She was definitely a coach before giving the pro-tour a try.
And, as you say, the coaches who can put 'top-500' or 'top-700', or whatever, on their CV generally command more respect and more pay than the others.
To be fair I think players it is more than just the reputation although probably justified. Those who have played at that level can generally offer more when coaching decent club players, actively involved in competition. Some of the quick fixes and techniques to adjust errors when playing are inate to those who have played to that level, essentially are your own coach when you are actually playing and those that have tried to play to as high a level as they possibly can have given a lot of thought to their/the and are in a good position to pass it on. Particularly when they are still playing actively and enjoy hitting.
