Condolences to Ms Melichar. During the match I was thinking she wasn't playing as well today. In those circumstances, she was brilliant.
Anna goes up to a new CH of 66 in the live rankings. If points remain unchanged, then she will succeed Naomi as the leading Brit in about 3 weeks time, according to this always dubious site...
Not to be undersold - I believe that makes Anna just the third Brit to win a WTA level event in the last (at least) 25 years, after Heather & Johanna. Annie K (D), Joss (D), Naomi B (D), Tara (D) & Laura R (S & D) all made finals but could not claim a title.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
The first WTA doubles title for a Brit for 3 years.
This was Anna's 28th doubles titles, with 4 of the previous titles coming with her last really regular doubles partner before Joss, today's beaten opponent, Larsson. They teamed up for a year or so in 2008/9, winning one each at ITF 10k, 25k, 50k, 75k.
(WTA site no longer has any record of doubles matches played - so Anna has apparently never played a match!)
Anyway, a revived Smith/Larsson partnership could be in prospect, perhaps? That would be a very interesting. I believe Anna has some Swedish family, and possibly speaks some Swedish?
Very sorry to hear of Ms Melichar's loss - and hope that the doubles title is one of those things which she can remember with pleasure in years to come despite its associations. Rough timing with Roland-Garros so soon - balancing family needs, one's own emotional needs, and career needs can never be easy for a tennis player - all the best to her in attempting to do so.
Delighted for Ms Smith. This is turning into quite a year for her!

Yes, no further wins in the interim and when Naomi & Heather's Birmingham SF points come off on 19/06 Anna would sneak into the GB #1 position ( Naomi's points are too low including her shown as dropping 15 points this week - noone should drop points this week since Monday would have been the midpoint of last year's French Open. Unadded to, I make her having 1097 points on 19/06 so as I said Anna's correct 1100 points just sneaks it )
Let's hope to see wins though, particularly at R-G and that Anna yet gets a chance there as well.
So good to see her last few weeks culminating in this title. Condolences to Nicole and her family.
