[...] I don't think we should get too carried away given the strength of the draw, but both are doing well, with Katie having the biggest upward curve this year. I'd agree Katie is very close to a Wimby MDWC now.
Yes, this is very good news, but caution about this necessarily being a forecast of long term improvement is wise. It is to be hoped that it is, but Laura, in particular has had a miracle draw here for a $60K. Here's a quick comparison of the rankings of her opponents in her run to the $25K title in Landisville last year as opposed to the $60K here (Includes a mark for Ms. Boutlers ranking in the final) :
Obviously, you can only beat the players that get drawn against you, and full credit for that. Cautious optimism when extrapolating anything further.
Katie has now played exactly as many, and won exactly as many, matches this year as Johanna. A win in the final would mean that, by some arguments, she is having even a better year than our #1!
Well done all

Yes! Rooting for Laura in the final though, I think she needs it more. Well done to both.
Why? They've both had time out with injuries (and illness in Katie's case). Laura had all those WCs last year to top events and both have been given every support all their careers from the LTA. Wish them both well but I'm not sure I could say one was more deserving than the other.
People deserve to have a right to a preference without being jumped upon, and Samson didn't say anyone was more deserving.
I only say I think Laura needs it more because she's been near the top of the game and it must be frustrating for her as she hasn't been consistent at ITF level. So a title win would really cement her confidence going into the grass court swing. I think Katie is in a different place and whilst she probably wants to win very much, getting to a final at this level is great for her development. So it was a case of confidence building rather than picking favourites.

I do apologise if I came over as being aggressive, it wasn't intentional. I was just genuinely curious as to why Samson felt one needed it more than the other given that they were both in the process of rebuilding their careers after long spells out. I did wonder if he felt one was perhaps more deserving than the other which is why I put the comments in about them both having had lots of support. But yes, I can see your logic Samson that the distance for Laura to get back to pre-injury position is greater than for Katie
I'm pretty sure (albeit not 100% certain) that Kurume is only the 6th all-GB women's singles final on the ITF Pro Circuit at 25K level or above in the 2000s and only the 2nd above 25K level in that time - the other being Bally v Katie O'Brien at Shrewsbury 75K in 2009, of course.
