Laura had treatment for what looked like a back injury at 3-4* but then recovered to win the next 3 games.
Birrell started very well but has started to make errors, Laura not playing especially well.
There is a video of the whole match posted up on tennisforum, and I actually think she had treatment on her left calf ( an injury she's had for quite a while now). Certainly you could see the tape on the back of her calf after the MTO, she also reached down to feel it during the 1st few games of the match. I thought from 5-4 she played well, and certainly at a level which will give her a real shot at beating the number 1 seed. I don't think she was particularly comfortable on the slippery court initially but that improved also along with the level of her play.

Laura definitely got better as the match went on, and Birrell got worse. After 30 minutes I thought Laura was going to lose, but she won easily in the end. The Bet365 stream was not of the best quality, so I was guessing about the injury, and with you're insider knowledge from Fed Cup I suspect you are correct!
Unlike the Labour manifesto, the Fukuoka order of play for tomorrow is yet to make it into the public domain, but I suspect both Laura and Katie's matches will be streamed and in the middle of the night.

Just really hope that it's nothing too serious. As mentioned above she had treatment in her R2 match and Phil advised of the calf problem that she has had for quite a while.

Calf injuries are very frustrating something and nothing but ver dehabilitating, at least it is not her wrist. Hope it gets better soon, rest is probably the only way forward.
A shame for Laura, she has had a couple of solid weeks in Japan, but it seems the injury was getting worse each match. Hopefully with a few weeks off she will be fully fit for the grass court season.
