RE: Week 19 - ITF ($25K) - Changwon, Korea Hard

This is a great win for Gabi, and I note, her first 25k final reached. I've just been looking at her record this year, as I thought she had been performing much better this year, yet her points tally shows she is only +11 on the year so far. However she has reached 2 25k QFs and 1 25k SF in Australia, and now her first 25k F in Korea. The first three results earned her only 36 points, so getting another 30 for reaching this final (and 50 if she was to win it), is the real pay off so far for an improving season. These four tournaments so far now provide her with 66 points of what will be an approx 130 total, depending on how she does in the final. In her points to come off soon Gabi has just one 25k QF, due off 12 June, and then her Wimbledon Q1 wind. Then she had a series of 3, 10k RUs in Nov 16 in Greece.

So the short of it is that Gabi has had just a marginally better year so far than last, albeit with seemingly better results in 25k events (though I don't know what the 25 points were that have come off), but now with this weeks points she is well positioned to go considerably higher in the rankings once the grass season starts. I'm not sure if she has a CH so far this year, but her 30 points min from this week will take her comfortably to one once they are added in 10 days time. She should be up to about 320 then and into the Brit top 10.

Fantastic day for Gabi - I was still awake when she won the QF and didn't really think she'd win the SF too, so that was a very nice surprise to wake up to

To answer the bit in bold, 31 points have come off so far (with another 4 due off from Monzon 10K SF when these go on), the vast majority of them (24) from her 25K+H SF in Irapuato in March 2016, when she got 24 points - 2 for qualifying and 22 more for making the SFs (c.f. 1 + 18 for a standard 25K without H)

I do think we have won a $25K or better every year this millennium though (and Sam Smith won one in 1999, too)
Highly probable I've missed someone out in the early years - apologies.

Figures in brackets are totals, dot/shell shows 1/1, 1/2 etc for that level for that player

That's an impressive (and, more to the point, very useful) table - thank you for compiling and posting it. I'm not going to try to check whether you've missed any - I assume you guessed who might have won one and then checked on ITF and/or Wikipedia (that's what I'd have done) so if there are any missing, it's likely to be a player not mentioned rather than an extra title for a player who is mentioned.

You can take that streak back to 1998 (e.g. Julie Pullin in a rare all-GB 25K final in Lexington and Lucie Ahl at Dublin 25K), though you probably knew that anyway, so a win this year would take the streak to at least 20 years. Not sure about before that.

Gabi holds to love (1 ace), breaks to 40 (helped by 2 dfs) then holds to 30 for 3-0*

Lao dfs twice more in her next service game but those are the only points Gabi wins in that game *3-1

Gabi holds to 15 then another Lao df gives her deuce but the American holds on. Gabi then holds to love again leaving Lao serving to stay in the 1st set - 5-2*

15-0 turns into 15-40 and Gabi converts the 1st set point 6-2

Gabi has won over 80% of her service points and more than half of the return points.

Fantastic - her first 25K singles title, obviously, upsetting 3 higher-ranked players in 2 days and it will probably see her break into the WTA top 300 ('virtual' GB no. 7) on Monday week

That was stressful, well not really, I came to enough to remember about the match, checked live scores and she was winning 6-2 5-2*.

Hmm, quite good, I'll stay with this! She broke to 30 and won the title.

An emphatic looking victory, tougher than that scoreline suggests? Apparently not, looking at the stats. Not a BP faced, Gabi converted 4/7. Points won 60 to 37.

Plus Gabi is now 4th best Brit on 2017-only points with 88, with about half as many as Heather and Naomi, just ahead of Tara (84), Laura (83) & Katie B (81)

The 50 points give Gabi 150 in total from 15 counters at an average of 10 points a counter.

I like round numbers

May they get bigger and bigger over time ...

Fantastic. Well done Gabriella.
Took out seeds 2, 3 & 4 to win it.

As the first of this age grouop to break through at this level, hopefully it will inspire her GB peers to simiilar feats.

Wow this is an incredibly impressive coming of age performance from Gabi. She has never beaten three people in a row with these type of rankings before... which puts her current ability level easily in the low 200s, if not higher. Congratulations indeed to her, and I really look forward to seeing her be able to kick onwards from here, especially once the grass season starts. smilesmilebiggrinbiggrin

Brilliant ! I thought that something had happened to Gabi when she withdrew from a tournament in Italy and the following

week in Russia when ranked no 1 she went out in the first round but this shows that she is back on track.

Well done Gabi!! Our first woman's 25K winner this year biggrinbiggrinbiggrin   winner.gif
