Week 19 - ITF ($25K) - Changwon, Korea Hard

What a day

Well done, Gabi.

That'll take out her CH by a way, too.

And just shows - last week Gabi lost 1&2 to a player ranked 400
This week she's scything through all the seeds, and beating a top 200 player.

Great win, indeed great last 12 months from Gabi.

She strikes me as a young lady determined to make the most of her talent. I have a lot of sympathy for her loosing out on an opportunity to go very deep at Wimbledon juniors last year through illness (although some of the nonsense reported around it was a bit painful).

This is a great win for Gabi, and I note, her first 25k final reached. I've just been looking at her record this year, as I thought she had been performing much better this year, yet her points tally shows she is only +11 on the year so far. However she has reached 2 25k QFs and 1 25k SF in Australia, and now her first 25k F in Korea. The first three results earned her only 36 points, so getting another 30 for reaching this final (and 50 if she was to win it), is the real pay off so far for an improving season. These four tournaments so far now provide her with 66 points of what will be an approx 130 total, depending on how she does in the final. In her points to come off soon Gabi has just one 25k QF, due off 12 June, and then her Wimbledon Q1 wind. Then she had a series of 3, 10k RUs in Nov 16 in Greece.

So the short of it is that Gabi has had just a marginally better year so far than last, albeit with seemingly better results in 25k events (though I don't know what the 25 points were that have come off), but now with this weeks points she is well positioned to go considerably higher in the rankings once the grass season starts. I'm not sure if she has a CH so far this year, but her 30 points min from this week will take her comfortably to one once they are added in 10 days time. She should be up to about 320 then and into the Brit top 10.

Sam, in partnership with Danielle Lao, Gabi's singles final opponent, have begun their doubles SF.

1-3*

Hopefully much still to unfold in an ultimately long but successful match that doesn't take too much more out of Danielle

Sam+ lost in MTB 8-10. Only 1 hour 29 mins though.

Bah so close for Sam +. And those MTBs sure cut doubles times down ( which was err the main reason for their introduction, still ... )

I think it might be over 4 years since one of our women won a 25k (Tara at Surprize in 2013). So hoping that Gabi can erase this dismal stat tomorrow.

Your general point is right: titles at $25K and above are vanishingly rare for Brits. Far more so than we often seem to imagine. Only a very few of our players have managed one.

But, Laura R. won Landisville $25K last year, so not quite as long as it might have been.

Well quite. Which is why I find it so odd that players like Katy D enter higher events so frequently, without having consistently reached the latter stages of 25s.

Sometimes it's location, as part of a long trip. Katy D seems to like Australia too.

But the prize money is better too - one win in a 60k pays $911 against $1144 for winning three rounds and reaching the SF in a $25k

Yep 25Ks are relatively good for points and with all the other levels upgrading now even relatively worse for prize money. It's all got a bit out of line and working out individual best itineraries can't be easy.

Also, unlike the men, the women get points (not many though) for winning Q matches at 60K+ so maybe feels less risky to try and move up.

I do think we have won a $25K or better every year this millennium though (and Sam Smith won one in 1999, too)
Highly probable I've missed someone out in the early years - apologies.

Figures in brackets are totals, dot/shell shows 1/1, 1/2 etc for that level for that player
