Week 19 (25K) Monzon, Spain, Hard

R1 Naomi Broady 1 (WC)! v Caroline Werrner Q (733) GER

Naomi seems to have decided she really doesn't like clay.

A baffling decision, can only assume she is skipping the rest of the clay but even so winning this title does nothing for ranking. At a push I'd say maybe keeping match fit but it's a month til the grass. Very confusing.

Naomi is on the list for the $100K in Trnava next week, on clay!

She is also on the alternates list for the WTA in Rome, also on clay.

Maybe she tried for a WC at Cagnes-Sur-Mer where Heather is playing, but all four went to french girls. Monzon just happened to be the nearest.

Yes maybe circumstances pushed Naomi this way.

Anyway, while 25Ks is not what she's really about at all I'd hardly say it does nothing for her ranking if she were to win it.

With 20 points due off on 08/05 and 15/05, she's currently heading for 432 points on 15/05.

A 25K title brings 50 points ( currently a net 49 to Naomi ), so upping her points by over 10% and in itself would move her from 432 points currently equivalent to WR 128/129 to 481 points currently equivalent to WR 116. So it would mean a few matches won and a nice little move back up the rankings.

Naomi has only three times scored so many points in the last year, indeed just 3 times more than 30 points - a 90, an 85 and a 70.

Yes, I think what's more surprising is that she hasn't headed for Japan, Korea or China, where she could have got 4 weeks at least of easyish points.

With the Wimbledon acceptance list cut-off coming up, several of our lower-ranked women will be hoping that both Naomi and Heather get good enough results this week and next to qualify for direct acceptance, freeing up potential wildcards for others.

Well that didn't go to plan. Naomi stutters over the line with a second set tie break, after serving for the match at 5-3

For Naomi, a win on clay is a win. smile

I thought Monzon was on hard courts? Still, any win is a win, whatever the surface.

True, and she sure needs the points this week, as does Heather. Live rankings have them at 125 and 126 right now

Edit and yes, it is hard court

Yes, certainly would free up initial WCs if Wimbledon sticking to the normal maximum 8 initial British WCs ( MD + Q ).

MD WCs for them plus Tara and even one or two others would not be a direct issue since we hardly generally oversubscribe British MD WCs, indeed don't use them all counting everyone some years.

But the knock-on initial restriction on Q WCs would likely have some players going to the qualifying play-offs that would have certainly hoped and preferred to avoid such a trip, just looking and counting 8 including Naomi and Heather.

We may end up dishing out quite a few further Q WCs over and above the guaranteed play-off two but some schedules at a potentially lucrative time might be compromised and they'ed presumably have to at least perform decently in the qualifying play-offs.

Apologies for my earlier mistake over surfaces. Just would be nice to see some players apparently giving Andy and Joko some support - I use apparently as the top 10-15 men and women seem to be doing reasonably well so far this year confuse
