And Stu Fraser had an exclusive in today's Times: the Chairman & Chief Executive of the company which sponsors her rackets, Head (Johan Eliasach), fully supports the FFT's decision. instead he has laid the blame for Shriekapova's missing out on the FO at WADA's door...
This makes sense all round - saves Wimbledon from the spotlight around this and what would be an awkward situation. Given they would inevitably turn it (MDWC) down, Sharapova was clearly sensibly advised and withdrew from making a request, saving everyone from the glare and embarrassment - first correct call by her. Second bonus for her is that she will play her way into Wimbledon from Birmingham , through 3 most likely winnable matches in Roehampton, and into Wimbledon match tight. Again, suspect that she has been well advised in that regard.
Glad it is all done and we can enjoy the tennis now.
God for Maria. If she's good enough, she'll qualify. If by any remote chance she doesn't, then proves the system works. Fingers crossed she doesn't meet one of ours.

Absolutely.
The only drawback of her being in qualies is that (if she isn't injured) she is in a league of her own there (sorry to all the others, but it's true). So instead of everyone having a fighting chance to come through qualies, there will be one section of the draw where all but one are at a distinct disadvantage. But, hey ho, maybe she'll come up against an inspired player and not have it all her own way...

God's on her side though.
... and I always thought he was English.
well I'd have thought you would have known for certain
Sharapova signs 2 year Birmingham deal. I assume this was a condition of this year's WC??

Desperation to try and put bums on seats - despite the quality field, Birmingham never supports this event in decent numbers.
you're right- and yet the field is stronger, this year at least, than Eastbourne. Maybe they should make it the week earlier and swap with Nottingham, Queens always managed in that slot a few years back
