I was just wondering if any one has heard whether any of our tournaments are giving Shrieky a wild card? I'm hoping not but as the top clay tournaments have.
I suspect it also depends on how she performs over the next few weeks. If she gets back into the top 100 all be it after the closing date for the grass tournaments then they probably feel it is easier to justify giving her a WC, and yes would give Nottingham a huge publicity boost and presumably add significantly to spectator numbers.

I wonder if 's-Hertogenbosch or Mallorca might be more likely locations for her to play - Spain seems happy to give her wildcards, its a new venue and thus the publicity may be very much sort after and playing outside of the UK might keep her away a little from the wilder UK tabloid press who would no doubt hound her in Nottingham, Birmingham or Eastbourne...she may well choose to play one of those two "European" events and then practice for the other 1 or 2 weeks...
Bouchard does for Shriekapova in three - just - in the grudge match in Madrid. Don't particularly like Bouchard & couldn't understand why she described the bloody woman as a "cheater" rather than a "cheat" (language problems? ) more than once, but my dislike of the cheat defies quantification. I am so pleased at that result & I pray to God that no one will be tempted to hand her an undeserved wild card for any of the grass court tournaments.
Reaching R2 here will still have moved the WR 258 up to about WR 210 so I imagine now just about into Wimbledon qualifying. Would be such a pity though if she ultimately didn't quite make it and was wandering about Roehampton as an alternate like wildcardless poor Sam Murray last year.
No brainer for the tournament in terms of ticket sales.
Yes. I wish they wouldn't but I have no problem with the smaller tournaments giving her a wildcard - they do have to sell tickets, the tournaments seldom make money, she's eligible and 'done her time' (I don't fully agree with the argument, in relation to wildcards, but it's got some relevance)....
But I think the Grand Slams should be different - they make large profits and are our 'beacons of justice' so should send a message
Hope she plays in as many UK events as possible, great player and always good to watch. She's made mistakes but hey who hasn't? Wasn't Agassi on coke at some point?
Great to have her at Edgbaston, which has always been a good event but know it's tier 1 (or is it 2?) then the draw has been great last couple of years.
Don't like Sharapova, can't stand her shrieking, dislike intensely her attitude to the other players, don't want her to get main draw slam wild cards BUT have found myself watching her matches so what can I say. Last night's match was excellent and makes me sympathise with organisers. Hope, like others on here, that she qualifies for a QWC at Wimbledon but also feel very sorry for any opponents if she does. Not the challenge they should have.
There's a particularly scathing article on the Birmingham wild card by Stu Fraser in today's Times in which he concentrates his fire on the LTA under the heading "Sharapova's welcome mat demeans the guardians of integrity". After noting that the LTA receives a surplus of some £40m annually from Wimbledon & was awarded £8.2m in National Lottery & government funding from Sport England this year, he quotes the LTA's mission ("to get more people playing tennis more often, and part of its role is to govern tennis in Great Britain, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man by acting as guardians to promote and safeguard the integrity of the sport") & comments:
Opening the doors and assisting a player who has just served a 15-month suspension for failing a a drugs test with a wild card is hardly a message of deterrence for younger players in this country who may be tempted in the future by performance-enhancing substances.
The AELTC doesn't escape his ire, either:
When it became apparent that Sharapova would probably require wild cards to compete in tournaments in Britain this summer, there was initial concern within the LTA over how to respond. If Wimbledon were to take a stance and not consider her for one, then it was difficult to see how the LTAS could do anything else.
However, the All England Club has made it clear that Sharapova will be considered at the meeting of its tennis sub-committee on June 20, if her ranking is not high enough to earn her a place in the main draw.
This refusal by Wimbledon officials to take an early stance has relieved the pressure on the LTA, though, who will now welcome Sharapova with open arms and watch the money roll in. So much for the guardians of integrity.
My thoughts entirely! Just totally sends the wrong message to those coming up behind. When settling the length of her ban, the authorities would have considered that it was long enough to remove her ranking and thus intended that to be part of the punishment. I've no problem with her playing again as she has served her time (unlike Miss Bouchard's take on the matter). But she should have to work her way back and not be treated like some returning heroine. I don't necessarily think she should be back at 15Ks (although why not?) but any WCs should definitely not be at tour level.
It's obvious by the comments already being made that's Sharapova will get a MDWC for Wimbledon. Not surprising really sums them up really. Elitist, out of touch, middle class organisation, protecting the big names and screw the rest of you attitude. It's all about the money after all. No doubt exorbitant rises on food and refreshments again this year. It's the most expensive Slam to go and see as well.
