Rough draw for Jo, plenty of clay-courters in her section. If she gets as far as meeting Halep in the QF that would be a great effort. In fact winning R1 would be pretty good in itself.

Very tough draw. The only bright spot is that Madrid is notoriously kinder to big hitters than most clay tournaments. I believe Kvitova won here a few years ago.

I'm we've only go Jo in this, not even anyone else in qualies. Still, as has been said it's not as 'clay'-ey as some of the other clay court tournaments so I'm hoping for a good run for Jo. I'm glad she's in the dubs to give herself more clay time.

Jo broke first game as they got going just before midnight local. Arruabarrena and McHale managed to use up about another two and a half hours.
