Week 18 - ITF ($15K) - Santa Margherita Di Pula, Italy - Clay

Good thinking - it might just be a niggle though, as she played U18 County Cup in February, and National Team Tennis in early April.
Not the same level as a 15k though

It also appears to be her first match on clay since August 2015, in Juniors.

The battle of two high ranking juniors. Emily is 6 months younger than her opponent and has a JCH of 10 against her opponent's 39.

More likely the gap in competition has been a training block then.

Last week here, Dommie & Alessia reached a $25K semi-final together.
This week, they win just two games in their first match of a $15K.
Those are quite some swings and roundabouts.

R16: Covington/Piran (GBR/ITA) 2357 lost to Karamoko/Samsonova (SUI/ITA) [4] 1769 2-6 0-6

Gutting! Emily lost a 2h 42m (for just 2 sets!) epic, saving 9 match points in the 2nd set (if I have counted them correctly - 3 at *4-5 and 6 in the 28-point tiebreak) before succumbing on the 10th. Total points won by In-Albon 100 to Emily's 99.

R2: APPLETON, Emily (GBR) JE 785 lost to IN-ALBON, Ylena (SUI) 4 618 CH=601 5/12/16 18yo JCH=39 by 7-5 7-6(13)

After 2 hours and 41 minutes for 2 sets and 99 points each:

(4) Ylena In-Alvin (SUI) WR 618, age 18 JCH 39 beat Emily Appleton WR 785, age 17 JCH 10 7-5 7-6(13)

In-Alvin won on at least her 7th separate MP of the TB, in almost every pair of points Emily winning the first but not the second.

Emily 3/10 on BPs, In Alvin 4/9.

I assume since Emily would have got into the MD by her ranking this tournament doesn't use up a JE although she was on the entry list using it? The draw doesn't show 'JE'.

Edit: OK, 2 hours 42 minutes and In-Albon now showing with 100 total points on the slightly less than live ITF score.

Edit 2: Steven, you're using backward names. I trust that this is just a temporary copy/paste thing and that you haven't more generally succumbed to such awfulness?! At least you put the score round the right way

LOL no, just laziness - since I wasn't going to have to write out another round (unfortunately), I just copied and pasted from above. At least I put the GB player's name first too.

I don't think JEs are used if the player ends up getting in on their actual ranking, though I haven't checked that in the rules.

On the first draft of the ITF draw Ms. Appleton was definitely designated as (JE)
Since the tournament began however, that has been removed. I presume for the reasons stated above.

She seems to be warming into the year event by event, despite the wafer thin epic loss today.
Hopefully this augurs that next time such a match arises there will be a more satisfactory conclusion.
Well done for seeking out Italian red clay and not avoiding it. I believe this willingness will surey help her overall game in the mid to long term.
