QF: ROBSON, Laura (GBR) 234 lost to ZHU, Lin (CHN) 3 136 3-6 4-6
Aces 1
DFs 9
1st serve in 57.1%
1st serve won 71.4%
2nd serve in 57.1%
2nd serve won 23.8%
2nd serve % in was the same as 1st serve % in. Even after removing the DFs from the 2nd serve her % points won on 2nd serve was lower than her 1st serve %. Laura would have won more points if she had simply served two 1st serves. Though not having seen the match or spoken to her it is hard to know what was going though her mind. It must put a lot of pressure on a player to find most of their 2nd serves being fired back as winners.
Laura looks to be edging towards much better form, this one always looked like a decent stepup, but still serve is crucial (velocity/ball toss/avoiding double faults).
F: Katy Dunne & Julia Glushko (ISR) CR 529 (376+153) vs (1) Eri Hozumi & Miyu Kato (JPN/JPN) CR 76 (37+39)
Hozumi & Kato did have a bit of a struggle in their SF, finally winning the MTB 10-8. Katy & Julia saw off the #2 seeds ( albeit quite a lot lower ranked than the #1 seeds ) in their QF so really good on that and carrying on into the final.
And being an 80K the ranking points are relatively substantial and a useful few dollars I imagine.
Just reaching the doubles final will take Katy up over 100 places to about WR 270, well past her CH 345 from March and from GB #11 to GB #7/8 level on points with Laura and ahead of EWS. A final win, clearly tremendous in itself, would take her up to about WR 235 and GB #6, then ahead of Tara and Laura.
While clearly singles is where Katy would really like to make a big mark, pushing up her doubles ranking so much at this time, with time and probably grass court opportunities to push it on higher, may have useful effects with Wimbledon almost on the horizon.

Thank you for this. It's interesting to see how much of big leap this run will give her. It's a shame that Julia is not playing the other ITFs in Japan as it would have been interesting to see how they got on if they maintained their partnership. The final looks very tough and pits Katy against her kryptonite opponent Eri Hozumi.
Yes, I'm afraid confirmed on ITF so you can take my 'just' reaching the final rankings scenario from my above post, but certainly indeed congratulation on reaching that final.

Thanks CD and Indiana. Looks like Hozumi and Kato woke up after my post. Numerous breaks of serve by both teams prior to that then 6 straight games won. Good effort for the tournament though.
