A few too many weak shots during the tiebreak. Got the initial mini-break then huge momentum shift. Almost got back from 2-6* but dumped a routine backhand in the net. Shame.
Then immediately broken to love at the start of the 2nd.
DT down 0-40 after one super E b pass winner, a df and a DT ue, comes up with good play to save all 3 bps then hold. Dan left regretting not doing more on a 2nd serve return *0-2
After a series of easy holds, Dan comes up with a brilliant b winner for 15-30, then T nets a s+v, only to save both bps with an ace and a smash *2-4
This time Dan saves 2 bps but gets himself back in trouble by repeatedly missing his first serve and eventually pays the price as DT's b clips the sideline, causing Dan to net a f 2-5*
Fine margins but a straight set loss. A lot of good tennis from Dan but on the key points, Thiem the better player. 2-6

Quick shout out for Yuchi Sugita, who sneaked into the MD on a lucky loser spot having been beaten in qualies by Steven Diez. Sugita has now taken out Robredo, Gasquet and Carreño Busta to reach the QFs.

I've been watching his progress with some interest, Bob. It'll be interesting to see how Dominic Thiem deals with him.

Despite losing, considering the quality of his opponent that's arguably his best performance of the week. It's a game of chances, Thiem took 2 of his 6 BP's and Evo 0, but to be so competitive against a top class player like Thiem on clay (!) should be massively encouraging for Dan.
