On clay Jo goes from a top 10 player to a top 40 player. That's understandable, and not that big a problem, she's got a couple of years to get the hang of it and if she keeps picking up a handful of wins she's keeping herself ticking over until the stronger parts of the year.
Her results haven't been awful, it's just her strengths don't carry across as well and she ends up out of position and unable to finish points.
I don't really think it's worth getting too pent up over getting thumped by Halep and a fairly evenish loss to Sevastova. She'll be fine.
If Sharapova wins this week she will be around 120 in the rankings. Looks quite possible she won't need a Wimbledon wide card at all if she does half well in Madrid and Rome. Can't say I'd be happy but probably better that way than a bitter debate on whether she should receive a WC
2. Anna may have been second fiddle in Jossanna; but second fiddle is a necessary role; and Naomi could well prove to be a more convincing virtuoso/soloist than Joss.
From the age of 19 - 27, Laura Siegmund managed the princely total of 6 wins in a WTA main draw.
And there she was, this weekend, holding up the WTA Stuttgary trophy !
I know our 'you've got to be in the top 100 by the time you're 20 lot' will say she's an exception.
BUT it's brilliant to see .... well done, her..... and here's to many others like her.
