RE: Week 16 - ITF ($25K) - Santa Margherita Di Pula, Italy - Clay

Kamila Kerimbayeva - Santa Margherita Di Pula $25K, 27th March.
Lost final round of qualies, lost first round of MD as a LL.
Ranking Points awarded: Zero

Tess Sugnaux - at the same $25K
Lost final round of qualies, lost second round of MD as a LL.
Ranking Points awarded: Five

So, it seems Emily now needs to win a match to earn any points here. She will not get the single point for R32 participation.

Thank you for that. Just go and win that R1 match then, Emily.

4 blown set points, including all three from *40-0
Then saves 3 BP, and, then... takes a fifth set point

1-6 7-5

Which she does - on the 5th set point, with 3 break points saved as well - phew !

Well done to Emily, taking her 5th set point of the game as she served for it and initially went 40-0 up.

I would have thought it looked a very decent chance of a 25K MD win, that basic ranking difference referred to not taking account of Emily being still a junior, presumably improving relatively quicker, still playing junior tournaments and with only half the maximum senior ranking counters.

22 yo Kovalets has 66 points from a full 16 counters with some to spare. 17 yo Emily has 20 points from just 8 counters.

Go Emily !

Emily bagelled in the third set, loses 6-1 5-7 6-0.

So not really at all clever looking first and third sets. Pity after getting that LL spot.

Ms. Appleton seems to be getting better, slowly, match by match so far this year, but it's a slow process, and little tangible reward so far from three events played.
R32: (LL) Emily APPLETON (GBR) 787 lost to (Q) Sofiya KOVALETS (UKR) 477 1-6 7-5 0-6
