Someone DM'd me on Twitter a couple of days ago asking if I thought he should bet on Aljaz losing (by which he meant tanking) his QF so that he could play in Monte Carlo. I told him Aljaz didn't seem like the kind of player who would be tempted to throw a match and that he probably had more to gain (points-wise at least, not $-wise) by trying to win Barletta than by taking his chances in the Monte Carlo qualifying draw. Very happy to see Aljaz trying his best to prove me right (without knowing it!) in both of those assertions
I also told the DMer I don't give betting advice EVER! - a) I don't have a death wish and b) if I was that confident, I'd put money on myself LOL

So very pleased for Aljaz to see him putting performances together for a few straight weeks. He's now up into the top 40 in the race and moving back up the rankings impressively. Looks like he's finally put the negativity around DC etc. behind him and I couldn't be happier for him.
Phew! First set finally in the bag by 7-6(4). Thought he'd blown it after he failed to convert a set point in the tenth game & was broken to 15 when he served for it again in the twelfth! He made it hard for himself!
And in the TB was *4-1 then a shocking miss and a couple of further points and it was 4-4*. But he got there.
Now locating the service box with his first serve more than 40% of the time might help make things a bit easier though still could be a fair war of attrition.
Yes! Aljaz takes his second title in as many weeks! Well done, lad!
Final: (2) Aljaz Bedene WR 76 defeated (1) Gastão Elias (POR) WR 97 by 7-6(4) 6-3
Much of the fight seemed to go out of Elias after that tie-break. I couldn't hear what he was saying as he served to stay in the match in the eighth game, just that he was chuntering to himself in Portuguese, but he clearly wasn't a happy (Easter) bunny!
62% first serves in in the second set and the two he served in the final game brought two simple points to help ease him to the line.
As well as a 3rd challenger title in 5 weeks with 2 in successive weeks ( 10 wins in a row ) the final was his 10th win against a top 100 ranked player this year as against 5 losses. Against top 50 players he is 3-3.
Looks like he is up to WR 69 and race #31 - just easing ahead of one Daniel Evans who is #32.
