Week 15 - Indonesia F6 ($15,000) - Jakarta (hard)

Congrats again to Jonny G.

Which, as a name, had a great ring about it.

But, on a sidenote, does anyone know if he actually goes by 'Jonny'?

I've used Jonny all the time, because Jonathan is a mouthful (and maybe having a Jonny O and a Jonny G seemed a good match).

I've seen him play live only the once, and it was at the Bank of England club, so not many raucous friends shouting out. And I don't see a twitter feed that would give a clue.

But he might be Jon ? Or Jono ? Or Jonnie ? Or J ? Or Nat ? Or even Jonathan ?

QF:  (1) Brydan Klein WR 231 defeated Hung Jui-Chen (TPE) WR 899 by 3 & 2

QF:  (SE) Jonny Gray WR 1106 defeated Jake Delaney (AUS) WR 843 by 5 & 2  biggrin

*****

SF:  (1) Brydan Klein WR 231 vs (3) Max Purcell (AUS) WR 309 (= CH)

SF:  (SE) Jonny Gray WR 1106 vs (2) Chen Ti (TPE) WR 255 (CH = 184 in September 2015)

Can't see Jonny beating the Taiwanese, but you never know...    What are the odds on all-GB final, I wonder?

I've been calling him Jonny because other posters were & I assumed superior knowledge on their part.  I don't automatically shorten names just because the shorter form exists, however tempting it may be (as witness Alastair Gray, Jonathan Binding, Joshua Rose, Matthew Brooklyn, Samuel Beddow, Alexander Carlos Parker...).  Incidentally, I never knew "Nat" was a shortened form of "Jonathan"!  confuse

Yours is the more respectful approach, SC.

I deliberately shorten names, without any prior knowledge, because it feels less official, and more mate-y, and I seriously doubt that anyone would take offence.

And I remember wondering when typing 'Jonny' for the first time ....

So, I doubt it really matters but, yes, it would be good to know

Maybe someone knows firsthand....

And, yes, I knew someone who went by Nat who I'd always assumed was Nathan but turned out to be Jonathan - which makes some sense, I guess, as that the names share that part. Seemingly, Jonathan means 'God has given', whereas Nathan is 'he has given', i.e. you've got the verb without the Yahweh/God part.

Two consecutive SFs will see Jonny/Jonathan rise to around the 830 mark in the rankings, with of course the possibility to go higher if he continues his run this week.

Fantastic run of form from Jonny G. This is almost what is called "doing a Jay". Think I had better add Jonny to my list of potential Top 500 players for the end of the year.

Let's hope sincerely that Jonny, like Kyle, can successfully graduate from the BiS school of GB talent spotting. Perhaps not with such high honours but always good to see new talent emerging smile

Perhaps he just likes to be known as Mr.Gray. A la Reservoir Dogs.

To be fair to Jaffa, and others, and not wanting to knock Bob in any way, but I don't think Jonny was one of Bob's picks.

Yes. Credit to others on this one for sure.  Not seem Jonny play - yet.  But it's on my list of things to do, which also includes finding the opportunity to watch Jay as well.
