Week 14 - WTA International ($227K) - Abierto Monterrey, Mexico Hard

A definite "phew" at the end of Hev's match.
Good luck to both in the next round.

Its very noticeable how close the history of matches between Naomi and Babos is - all v close with 6 tiebreaks in 9 sets. I guess Babos is favourite but is Monterrey a "fast" court event, is there some altitude at play in Monterrey and some thin air to help the venue speed up? I am completely guessing tbh... We may be in for another couple of close sets...

Monterrey is 538m (1765ft) above sea level.

The same as Munich (520m) but less than Madrid - 667m (2188ft)

So certainly not excessive. But players have still talked about some noticeable effects in Madrid and Munich.

Thanks both - interesting, looks like it could be quite fast and if Naomi has her serve going, she may have a chance of an upset against Babos. Makarova is quite a strong player in doubles as well as singles and might be too much for Heather...

The courts are fast, and the humidity is low, so quick conditions generally.

This is also played on the old formulation DecoTurf, and with the Wilson US Open balls, so that all adds to the quick conditions.

Thanks for the info. Looks like Naomi has a chance to create an upset if she can play to her strengths...thanks

That's err quite a feat

I take it that they lost quite a number of games by just a point, ie. losing these ruddy deuce points.

One of those strange matches where a pair has both the best (Kichenok) and worst (Jakupovic) players on the court.

At *3-4 the girls saved 3 match points before Jakupovic got an absolute fluke net court on her return at deuce to get the break, and that was it.

Out 6-3 6-3

Disappointing, didn't play that well as a pair, and in this field a missed opportunity to get some silverware I think. But bigger fish to fry tomorrow.

Playing ok but her returning remains a bit mince.

One dodgy service game in each set leaves her a set and a break down.

3-6 *1-3

Utter rubbish from Naomi so far. Aces and unreturned first serves about what you'd expect, the rest of her game has been shocking.
