I'd argue that this was Naomi's best win since she defeated Ivanovic in Auckland, Jan. 2016.
The wins against Puig & Shvedova in the interim were good, but I'd put this above them.
A very welcome surprise.
If only Naomi herself seemed to understand what makes her perform in a match like this, and for the duration of that match. As opposed to most of the others, where something or another goes missing resulting in routine losses. Even if it's just 'good serving' why are so many days not as effective, etc.
Being able to produce it more often being the obvious aim.
Yes, I would imagine surely that Naomi and her coach(es) have looked for common themes in days and matches when she has served very well and when her serve has been well off its best. The intention then would be to seek to control the controllables in say her match prep that seem associated with good days and work round the less controllables, be it weather or whatever. For when that serve is on fire she can really trouble highly ranked players.
Plus, of course, more practice generally brings more consistency, with never neglecting to try to make an asset / weapon even moreso as well as working on weaknesses. I would imagine that such as Isner and Karlovic have practiced their already potent serves a heck of a lot over the years to bring their consistency, often high first serve in ratios suggesting this. It may not be great viewing for many, but for the player it makes eminent sense. 'Free points' ? - get as many as you can. People saying the player you beat was the 'better player' ? - you won the points and games that mattered, smile and move on.
Certainly Fitzy seemed to emphasise more than seemingly others previously just how much the serve could achieve for her.
Got the break back then played a terrible game to be broken again. Still winless on the WTA Tour in 2017. Out 63 64 to a solid ITF pairing. The sort of pair they disposed of easily at their best a couple of seasons ago, but have struggled against the past 18 months
Fortunately they only have Gstaad SF in July to defend otherwise nothing until September, so basically any kind of result at all will help.

Maybe next week....
Jossanna also have a French Open R2/L32 (130 points) to defend ( not that they look likely to have the chance to directly do so ) in addition to the Gstaad SF (110 points).
