Aljaz has posted on his facebook page to explain that rather understandably his retirment yesterday was due to it being his 8th match in as many days and he just ran out of gas. No injury and still planning to play in France in week 14 to kick off his clay campaign.
Well, not exactly. He DOES say there was an injury issue but, I agree, it doesn't sound as though it's anything serious at all, just from over-playing, and fatigue sounds the major thing. But 'injury' comes into it...
"Yesterday's day didn't go as planned. I retired due to an injury and exhaustion. Playing 8 tough matches in 8 days is never easy and I definitely needed a day off to play that first round. Very happy with the way the short US trip ended. Next tournament - Sophia Antipolis Challenger"
I was just thinking the same. He still picked up more points than Dan and Kyle this week. So as long as there's no injury and he is indeed just nackered, it was worth the trip for the 26 points and more than $13k prize money I'd say.
Evo I'm not concerned about. It will be interesting to see how he plays it during the clay season. It's essentially a choice between money and points really. I suspect he'll go for a mix of a few bigger clay events and some challengers on hard.
Kyle is more of a concern, but he's strong on clay and a good period on the dirt will get his season back on track, and with it his confidence. Nobody will want to see him in their section of a draw, particularly on the red stuff.
I have to say I think it was pretty rotten of the organisers not to give Aljaz a match today instead, which they easily could have done. They must have been aware of his schedule in the run up to the first round. Instead they got a default which is no use to anyone...

Like Indian Wells, Miami does schedule most of its rounds with the whole halves of the draw playing on different days. I haven't noticed any exceptions with either this year though I haven't exactly studied it all fully.
If that's how they schedule, players know this, and they don't make exceptions then tough but fair. And holding back one player's match of course holds back his opponent who would probably prefer to remain on schedule.
I have no concerns re Kyle either. He has benn incremental in his improvement and one would expect the trajectory of any further rise to be much flatter purely because of the rarity of the altitude he now frequents ie in and around the top 50.
Any further elevation needs him to go deep in a slam or 1000, that will come in time and realistically he has a 4 year window now 22-26 to become a top 20 hopefully top 10 player before he is in his prime. He just needs to keep a rank that keeps him in the main draw of slams and 1000's. The 500 and 250's are tricky as the draws are loaded from the first round top 32 would really help in terms of 1st round draws.
I agree clay is where he is most likely to go deep, the slower the surface the better. Rome, Paris if moist better than Madrid but all good. I would also like to see Kyle play a bit of doubles on clay, perhaps with Dom, he is a Junior French open doubles winner, it's more tournament game time and again offers depth and options in DC, who knows who is going to get injured??
I'd say for Kyle so far 2017 is a bit disappointing with good performances against Wawrinka and Djokovic being set against quite a number of below par somewhat uninspired performances, and I am sure that he would have hoped for more and some greater tournament advances. He has too often not played at top 50 level.
On the other hand it is still early in the year and impressively consistent as his improvement has been, at best pauses such as this can happen. And it is good that he has raised his game against clearly better quality opponents.
I get the feeling he is needing a bit of a confidence boost and hopefully that will come as he moves on to the dirt.
I will be glad when people are seeded where they ought to be again - a world in which Roger Federer v Juan Martin del Potro is a 3rd round match, and Jack Sock v Jared Donaldson (admittedly that's a w/o) is a 4th round match is a very topsy-turvy world.

Even more of a pity that Kyle didn't convert on of those 3 MPs in his match against Donaldson. It could easily have been him in the 4th round instead.

Indeed. A tournament in which both Mr. Federer and Mr. Nadal are entered and fit, but Mr. Wawrinka and Mr. Nishikori are the top two seeds, is a very disorienting state of affairs.

And Sock (still don't understand why that name irritates me so much! ) & his doubles partner, Nicholas Monroe, unseeded, have just seen off Kontinen & Peers (1) in the last 16 by 3-6 7-6(5) [10-8]!

maybe because it forms a part of a USA (dare I say Yank!) phrase, "sock it to them"
