Weeks 10 & 11 - ATP 1000 - BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells, CA

What a shame. Really thought Kyle was going to take that set having been up a break twice and at one point had a BP for a 4-0 lead. Kyle served for the set at *5-4 but Djokovic denied him, and came back to win a breaker 7-5. I do think however that was Kyle's best set of tennis against one of the really top guys. It looked like for the first time as though he truly thought he could win at this level instead of just competing and there were periods in that 2nd set where he dominated the patterns of play.

Losing is always tough, but I hope Kyle can take some real positives from that 2nd set in particular. Of this three matches against Djokovic, that was his best performance by far.

What is really exciting about Kyle is the way his incremental improvement has been so consistent and although this is a surface that optimises one of his strengths that incremental improvement has been on all surfaces. No sitting on his laurels the evidence fro his performances is that he is constantly working to get better. Long may it continue.

A real shame he got caught cold in the first set, but compared to last year (which was by no means a disaster) even that first set was an improvement, in time I think he will be a player everyone wants to avoid at Indian Wells.

As for Andy's draw, in case anyone was wondering whether anyone other than himself remained in his half who could hit a tennis ball :

R1: Bye
R2: Yen-Hsun Lu / Qualifier or LL
R3: Includes (30) Lopez
R4: Incl. (16) Bautista Agut / (21) Carreno Busta
QF: Incl. (7) Tsonga / (11) Goffin
SF: Incl. (3) Wawrinka / (8) Thiem / (10) Monfils / (13) Berdych

Hey, I bring more happiness. Carreno Busta has a w/o over Bautista Agut. So that can be added to the earlier exits of Lopez and Tsonga, which opens up the above arduous path a bit. Now to reach the SF it is

R3: Lajovic

R4: Carreno Busta

QF: (11) Goffin / (22) Ramos-Vinolas / (27) Cuevas / Fognini.

Good stuff, eh.

Sorry, what's that you saying about qualifier, out ...

(1) Herbert & Mahut were beaten by Djokovic & Troicki in a MTB to follow the Bryans out of the tournament.

While Jamie & Bruno have a chance to significantly close up in the rankings, the biggest beneficiaries could be Kontinen & Peers who will go WR 1 & 2 respectively if they reach the final.

I've just read on MTF that Kyle received abuse on FB after losing to Nole. Can anyone confirm or deny this please. I find it pretty hard to believe.

Hope Jamie can get further into the event but would be pleased to see Peers get to number 2 in the world after what happened season before last. good for him , it would have been easy to lose confidence but he bounced back and found another great partner and reaping the rewards

Thanks Jon, I didn't realise that this sort abuse happened at all, let alone that it was common place. I've always thought that it would be tough to be in the public eye, but not that tough. I have even more respect for the guys now!

I think that it is all linked to betting, Helen.

People get very bitter about abusive when they've staked more money than they should, and then lose.

It's absolutely revolting. Players (and others) need to be very strong to be able to ignore it - not everyone can.

Katy Dunne (I think it was) and other GB girls have received some really disgusting, vile stuff. Should be illegal. (And I'm generally pretty libertarian and against endless laws).

Hmm...  They have to get past Gilles Müller & the mighty Sam Q first, then NoDjo & Troicki or Klaasen & Ram (6)!  wink

Really surprised to see the NoDjo/Troicki win.
