Good win in the end for Heather, she battled hard when it was a struggle to get ahead in the second set and then the decider was much more straightforward as Gibbs lost her way. I doubt Jo will be too concerned by the quality of tennis on show today, but the conditions of thin air and a slow court make it very tough for players short on confidence and there will be plenty of scrappy matches in the early rounds.
Yay, glad she pulled away. I was not looking forward to another tight third set.
And while it might be good for her to win a very tight match losing another would not be at all good for a player who does certainly really feel defeats.
Really well done. Breaks from 40-0 for a 46 62 62 win. She did deserve it. Her level was a bit meh throughout but she was steady, whereas Gibbs had a hot streak in the first set then really fell away and started panicking and getting into all sorts of bother. Match point was a beauty.
Hope that gives her a boost, she gutsed it out not playing well, and she plays well against Jo.
As soon as Hev started serving well, the result was never in doubt. The cross backhand was excellent, the overheads were good. The errors were in set 1, mainly on a faltering serve.
Hoping its a good match. Can usually end up messy when players are friends. Would, on balance, prefer to see Jo come through now that Hev has done a good job getting a win under her belt and have a good run (though I suspect Miami conditions might suit her better) and try to make some inroads so get towards single figure ranking.
