This match is definitely there to be taken for Dan. Looks like if he could find some 1st serves Gael might beat himself anyway.

Dan produced some spells of excellent tennis in what was a very patchy match but his first serve percentage was a woeful 41%, he saved just one bp, and made a few too many careless errors, typically early in the game, that ultimately cost him. Monfils impressive in the first set, terrible in the 2nd, but having got himself in trouble in a couple of service games in the 3rd set, came up with good play to save bp then hold.

He should certainly play Monte Carlo as I'm sure it's the only non-mandatory masters!

L16:  (1) Andy Murray WR 1 defeated Guillermo García (ESP) WR 97 by 2 & 0  smile

*****

QF:  (1) Andy Murray WR 1 vs Philipp Kohlschreiber (ESP) WR 29 (CH = 16 in July 2012)

Kohlschreiber won the first match he ever played against Andy (L32 of Monte-Carlo Masters in 2010 - 2 & 1), but Andy has triumphed on each of the four occasions on which they have played since, most recently the last 32 of the Madrid Masters in 2015 (6-4 3-6 6-0).

Andy overtakes Evo to be currently top Brit in the race. Pity for Evo, but well done young Andy, got there by March

A lot of big names falling by the wayside in Dubai with Wawrinka (Lost to Dzumhur in R1), Federer (Lost to Donskoy in R2) and Berdych (Lost to Haase in R2) already out. Apart from Andy, the only two seeds left are Monfils and Pouille.

Don't think this has been reported yet:

QF:  (1) Henri Kontinen & John Peers (FIN/AUS) CR 11 (5+6) defeated Dan Evans & Gilles Müller (LUX) CR 436 (276+160) by 7-6(1) 6-4  cry

Pretty close! hmm

Mark Petchey said during commentary that Dan might not have been feeling 100% fit and thought he had heard him coughing after the second set so there may be mitigating factors.

Ah pity if that's the case. Not that he particularly needs mitigating factors for losing to Monfils in 3 sets.

He has come so far in a relatively short time, top 50, direct into ATP 500s and indeed ATP Masters and very competitive with some leading players.

Indeed. He definitely stayed true to is word and didn't spend too long "faffing around in futures" upon his comeback
