Dan produced some spells of excellent tennis in what was a very patchy match but his first serve percentage was a woeful 41%, he saved just one bp, and made a few too many careless errors, typically early in the game, that ultimately cost him. Monfils impressive in the first set, terrible in the 2nd, but having got himself in trouble in a couple of service games in the 3rd set, came up with good play to save bp then hold.

L16: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 defeated Guillermo García (ESP) WR 97 by 2 & 0
*****
QF: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 vs Philipp Kohlschreiber (ESP) WR 29 (CH = 16 in July 2012)
Kohlschreiber won the first match he ever played against Andy (L32 of Monte-Carlo Masters in 2010 - 2 & 1), but Andy has triumphed on each of the four occasions on which they have played since, most recently the last 32 of the Madrid Masters in 2015 (6-4 3-6 6-0).
A lot of big names falling by the wayside in Dubai with Wawrinka (Lost to Dzumhur in R1), Federer (Lost to Donskoy in R2) and Berdych (Lost to Haase in R2) already out. Apart from Andy, the only two seeds left are Monfils and Pouille.
Mark Petchey said during commentary that Dan might not have been feeling 100% fit and thought he had heard him coughing after the second set so there may be mitigating factors.
