Fiona is a player who's been mentioned before as playing practically every week, week in and out, and barely winning a match apart from where there is a very favourable draw, a retirement or some such Act of God.....
However, by dint of enough flukey wins by entering enough tournaments, she has crept up the rankings.
This morning, she was the rank outsider in her match against a player who barely plays ITF tennis. As a major Fiona sceptic, even I thought, with purpose, that that was overdoing it a bit. However, it doesn't boost Fiona's credentials or detract from the fact that Maia's ranking is WAY more solid than Fiona's.
Laura won fewer points in the match, in fact trailed in many of the stats, but the young Swiss second serve was a liability and seems the difference in the end.
Well done Laura. GB 1-8 SUI
Now over to Sarah Beth, currently warming up, to get another.
