Week 8 - ATP 250 - Delray Beach Open, Delray Beach, FL (hard)

Kyle clearly provokes his opponents.

The evidence is building after the Davis Cup and this

Link to episode prior to game penalty - but I'm none the wiser - perhaps others can make out what happened ?

Did he deliberately hit the out serve into the crowd?  At first glance I thought he just mis-hit it although it was an extravagant swipe at the ball.  Can't think of any other reason for a penalty.  Had he been warned or penalised earlier in the match for it to be a straight game penalty if that was the reason?  Maybe since the injury to the David Cup umpire they are being stricter on this rule?

'Mannarino's game penalty was for hitting a ball boy with a ball. He'd already received a point penalty.' (from Twitter). and

can see more clearly on a Gif on this guy's Twitter  https://twitter.com/doublefault28

(I can't seem to make a link to the Gif that shows it)

Just watched the YouTube highlights - as well as the ball incident at the end he prompted Mannarino to kick over a courtside chair early in the second set! He just brings out the worst in people!! wink

BBC reported that he'd won by default for the second match running.

Whilst undoubtedly similar, this is clearly incorrect. A game penalty in the final game and a 6-3, 6-0 scoreline is not the same as 6-3, 5-0 DEF. I wish they would get their facts right.

The match was stopped at   5 - 0    15- 0 or 0 - 15 (I can't remember which).  Only the game penalty made it 6 - 0.

Either way Mannarino's behaviour was childish and certainly unprofessional. Made Nick K look like a grown up - dont get me wrong I love watching NK and other similar flair players but flair and passion (McEnroe, Connors, Leconte, Noah, all historic favourites of mine) dont have to translate into childishness and dummy spitting and that is what Mannarino was doing.

Hope Kyle can get a good win against the solid but journeyman Lu.

One further peculiarity of this draw is that you potentially don't want to draw a qualifier. The top three seeds in qualifying are Steve Darcis, Hyeon Chung, and Vasek Pospisil ... the first of whom would have been close to being seeded had he been in the main draw.

As witness the fact that Darcis drew Bernie Tomic (6) in the main draw - & beat him by 3-6 6-1 6-4 earlier! wink

Thanks for that, SC - I hadn't really been following ... and as Darcis is a player I like to see do well, I'm delighted to learn that.

Not sure that win is anything to do with Darcis' abilities. One of the clearest tanks you'll ever see from Tomic.

Yes. Don't know about the end but the second set was awful - if that doesn't get penalised for 'lack of best effort', I don't know what does....

Yes, and therefore the final score was 6-3, 6-0. A game penalty in the final game is not the same as a default.

I think it's splitting hairs slightly.

I think Julia is saying that the match did not get finished, the last point/game was not played, hence you could call it a default. Even though there's maybe a slight difference.

One of the official French sites has him as being 'disqualified'. That sort of implies default, more than just lost 0-6.
