How come Istomin recieved a bye in QR1 when the top seed didn't get one?
Conjecture time : The drawsheet shows a qualifying withdrawal for Stafanos Tsitsipas ( received a MD WC ). Perhaps this was a late WC reallocation after the qualifying draw had been made ( and he due to play Istomin ) and was indeed underway, and there were no alternates signed in. The fact that the drawsheet also shows a specific player as the last direct acceptance other than 'bye', which would be normal in a draw shortfall, also indicates that it was originally a full draw.

Spot on. The very first draw sheet I saw had Istomin down to play Tsitipas and I recall hoping the youngster would win as I didn't like Aljaz's chances against Denis. Clearly I should have had more faith, does this mean Aljaz is better than Novak? Hopefully he gets slotted with another qualifier in the MD and avoids the qualifying slot versus Berdych.
I really don't see this partnership lasting. Mergea has already dumped Dom once and as of now their combined ranking is probably not good enough for them to get into Masters events and Mergea could easily get in with a better ranked partner.

That thought went through my mind when I saw the result!
