Week 6 - ATP 250 - Open Sud de France, Montpellier (hard)

Well, well, well...

L32:  Dan Evans WR 45 (= CH) vs (6) Mischa Zverev (GER) WR 35 (= CH)

L32:  Aljaz Bedene WR 110 (CH = 45 in November 2015) vs Borna Coric (CRO) WR 57 (CH = 33 in July 2015)

The other seed in Dan's quarter is Gasquet (3).  If Aljaz perchance wins his match, he'll play Sascha Zverev (4).  Cilic is the top seed & JWT the second.

I am not seeing Dan's name in the draw - I think he has been replaced by an LL.   I am not suprised, I think it is the right decision for Dan.  He is due to play an absurd amount of tennis over the next 10 weeks.  His next week off won't be until the clay starts after the Masters 1k in Miami. And he still may be needed for the DC at the start of April.

In an interview in The Times yesterday, Dan said he's had enough of tennis for a bit - 'a bit sick of seeing forehands flying past or coming at me...' and would be going back to the UK to chill for a bit and wasn't going to think about competing until Dubai at the earliest.

He must have formally entered Monpellier, Memphis and Delray Beach - unless he is injured, isn't he obliged to play?

I don't think he is obliged to play, provided he formally withdraws before the deadline

Aljaz has not withdrawn and is now up 7-5 over Coric. Early exchange of breaks and then Aljaz broke again to seal the set, his serve is firing so far today which always makes a huge difference for him.

Me and my big mouth! Serve went walkabout in the second set and after holding an early 2-0 leave Aljaz was broken twice to lose 6-4. Into a decider, fingers crossed.

Very impressive finish, 12 aces including on match point 7-5 4-6 6-1

Edit:  Clearly SC has a time machine or something!

That quote about being fed up of seeing tennis balls coming at him or going past him went on:  "I just wanted to put everything out there on the court.  I don't think I played my best tennis.  It would be good to get home and just wait until Dubai and go again there.  I think it would be silly to play anything else.  I'm pretty sore and I'm in a bad way.  My feet are in a bad way."

Thanks SC, that reads rather better for Evo in the fuller version.

I saw that his withdrawal from here was shown on the drawsheet as due to a foot injury and did wonder if that was more just a convenient opt out. But to be fair, further to what he has said here I believe he has had foot problems going back to last year.

He's probably covered more ground over the first 5 weeks of this year than he did in the first 3 months of last year. 17 matches, including a few games of doubles. Purely in terms of volume, 41 sets of singles tennis, that would have taken him to mid March in 2016, factor in the quality of the guys he has been playing and the intensity of the matches and I am not surprised the soles of his feet resemble a baboons bottom.

At least now he is accumulating points on the main tour he can plan a schedule based on building up to GSs. It will be Interesting to see how he will prepares for RG. Like Trump germaphobia is a major issue for him, last year resulting in total abstinence from the dirt and a lucrative trip to the Far East in search of magic/fast carpets. I would like to see him embrace the clay court season, we will see.

Yesterday's Times had already hit the recycling bin!  Didn't intend to make Dan look poor, just typed what I could remember......
