The Winter Cup season got off to an inauspicious start from a British perspective as both under 12 teams failed to qualify for their finals. The boys beat Finland 2-1 but then lost 3-0 to Russia whilst the girls lost 2-1 to Switzerland before winning 2 consolation matches.
Tomorrow sees the under 14 and under 16s begin their campaigns. Our under 14 boys were drawn in Turkey, but have withdrawn. The under 16s are without Jack Draper and Anton Matusevich, so it is down to Harry Wendelken, Jacob Fearnley and James Story to try to qualify in Ukraine. They start against Germany.
The under 14 girls have the best chance of progressing, even without Holly Fischer. Kylie Bilchev, Amelia Bissett and Andrea Pineda are top seeds in Hungary, opening against Denmark. The under 16 girls are in the Netherlands, unseeded with Esther Adeshina, Morgan Cross and Victoria Allen taking on the host nation tomorrow.
In all cases we need to win our first two matches to qualify for the 8 nation finals
Although it is a little frustrating it is good that we have players that aren't playing for the right reason and very good to see some girls in what is a deep cohort of U14 girls being given an opportunity at this level with some chance of success.
The under 14s had an easy 3-0 win today over Denmark (Amelia winning 3 & 4, Kylie 0 & 2 with Amelia/Andrea taking the doubles 1 & 1). Tomorrow's qualifier against Spain will probably be tougher, as Spanish players are often underranked through playing only a small number of Tennis Europe events.
The under 16 girls have also enjoyed a successful day against the host nation in their group, Netherlands. Victoria won 6-4 6-0, Esther 6-2 6-0 and Esther combined with Morgan to take the doubles 4-6 6-3 [10-8]. Their qualifying match for the finals is against top seeds Serbia. Serbia earn their seeding through TE under 16 matches, so Esther is the highest ranked ITF player within the two sides.
The under 16 boys also had a 3-0 success against Germany, with Jacob winning 7-6(0) 6-0, Harry 6-3 6-2 and Harry/James taking the doubles 6-4 6-2 As with the girls their opponents tomorrow Ukraine gain their ranking through under 16 events, so Harry has the highest ITF ranking.
The under 14s showed there was no reason to worry about the Spanish, winning very easily this morning (Amelia won 4 & 0, Kylie 1 & 0, Amelia/Andrea 2 & 4) They play host nation Hungary tomorrow for seeding rights
The under 16 boys have also booked their place in the finals today. Jacob won 7-6(5) 7-6(4) and Harry 6-4 6-4 in matches that lasted more than 2 hours to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead. They face Italy or Belgium tomorrow for seeding rights.
And it is an impressive full house thanks to a 3-0 win for the under 16 girls (Victoria won 6-4 3-6 6-0, Esther 7-6(6) 3-6 6-4 and Victoria/Morgan 6-4 6-4) They also play Hungary for seeding rights. The under 16 boys will take on Belgium after completing a 3-0 win (James/Harry taking the doubles 6-3 1-6 [10-3]
Both girls teams continued their winning ways so will be seeded, but the boys won't. The under 14s won 2-1 against Hungary (Amelia lost 6-2 1-6 6-3, Kylie won 6-2 6-4 and the pair won the doubles 7-5 6-2) while the under 16s beat the same nation 3-0 (Victoria winning 7-5 6-3, Esther 6-4 6-3 over a higher ranked ITF player, and Victoria/Morgan edging the doubles 6-0 4-6 [11-9]. Meanwhile the boys lost 2-1 to Belgium (James won 6-3 6-1, Jacob lost 3-6 6-3 6-1 and James/Harry lost 6-4 4-6 [11-9]) All three teams will be in the finals in various venues in two weeks time.
The decision to hold three of the groups in Antalya, Turkey caused problems. We were not the only nation to withdraw (under 14 boys). At least 4 of the 7 under 16 girls nations allocated there withdrew.
The finals start tomorrow with the following matches and venues. All our teams nominated are as in the qualifying groups. The boys face a tough task against a strong Russian team led by Timofey Skatov
U14 Girls QF (Rakovnik, CZE): (3) GBR v Turkey
U16 Boys QF (Ronchin, FRA): GBR v (2) Russia
U16 Girls QF (Brest, FRA): ITA v (3/4) GBR
Two out of the three teams progressed to the semis - the under 14 girls with an expected, albeit hard fought win against Turkey, earning them a crack at top seeds Russia, who include the two top ranked Europeans. Less expected was the stunning 3-0 win for the under 16 boys against Russia. Jacob Fearnley won in straight sets against a player just outside the top 100 ITF, while Harry Wendelken came from a bagel first set to take out the highly rated former TE1 Timofey Skatov, who is already well inside the top 100 ITF. The under 16 girls lost 2-1 to Italy

Well, well done to the winning teams and commiserations to the U16.
I am afraid the Russians had it coming, forget Putin and all his fake news, e-espionage etc... any nation that condones the spelling of Timothy with an F gets what's coming.... Ronny Corbett was spinning in his grave!
Very interesting to see what are theoretically our two strongest age groups thriving, even though the strongest players in both have chosen not to play. It is as if those selected have a point to prove.
To beat either Russia or France in the SF's would really be throwing down the gauntlet. Some great results so far.
The under 16 boys have continued their fine run, defeating France to reach the final. We last won the trophy in 2011 with a team of Billy Harris, Christopher Pearce and Jonny O'Mara.
The under 14 girls were without Kylie today and missed out on bronze. However first blood to the British boys in the Ronchin final, with Jacob Fearnley edging a tight match 10-8 in the final set tiebreak
U14 Girls 3/4 play-off: (3) GBR 0 (4) Italy 2
Matilde Paoletti d. Andrea Pineda 7-5 3-6 6-2
