Don't think clay is Alex's best surface at any time but he has blown a few cobwebs off this week and got a couple of wins under his belt following his long injury lay off. Today's defeat was not a big surprise. Just good to see him on court and competing again.
Mr Ward has a history of coming back strongly after injury breaks. I was thinking that there had been one time that he returned from injury and won his first tournament back. Went into his ATP record to try to find it. Couldn't, but looking through was a reminder of just how many futures titles he's won, and how many good players he's vanquished at one point or another ... despite all the injury breaks. May this be the start of the next forward surge!
He has a lot of points to defend in the next couple of months and by Wimbledon I'd be surprised if he made the top 300. It's the second half of the year where if he stays injury free he will be hoping to push on.
I thought Alex was pretty proficient on clay. Just looking last year early on he played exclusively on clay and won titles before moving to hard and grass. And I'm pretty sure has played a lot on clay in previous years.
Anyway, good to see him back. May it be for a very extended time.
