Weeks 3 & 4 - Australian Open - doubles

So please to see that result when I got to work:  I went to bed early this morning as they lost the first set, so fearing the worst!

Interestingly, as it's the same quarter of the draw, the Aussie wild cards, Marc Polmans & Andrew Whittington, dumped out the eighth seeds, Daniel Nestor & ERV, in three sets overnight & another pair, Alex Bolt & Bradley Mousley, did for the fifteenth seeds, Bops & Pablo Cuevas, in three in the bottom half of the draw.  JP & Henri Kontinen (4) still going strong in that top half...

5 break points saved, 3 match points missed, but in the end the top seeds break back. 5-5 in the second.

Eek, that was a pity.

An awful linesman call ( or rather non call ) had them broken much earlier on in the game, but thankfully ( I thought ) we have challenges for bad line calls and half asleep umpires so that was sorted.

But at their final MP ( for now ) Dom double faulted with more danger to Mergea than the serve box and then hit an awful overhead for BP which was taken.

Hopefully Dom and Florin can turn it around in the MTB. It would really hurt to lose from that position.

They still have 3 full sets at slams (or 5 at Wimbledon).

Thanks RJA. I'd thought that was the case but somehow convinced myself I'd seen an MTB earlier in the tournament lol!

They have MTB in the mixed doubles.

They finally stop the rot by saving two break points before holding for 1-3*

If they can turn this round their draw has just opened up big time as Polmans and Whittington have defeated Rojer and Tecau.

They do play final set TBs in men's and women's doubles here ( unlike singles ) but not MTBs.

They play MTBs in mixed.

Lost 6-2 in the third.

Hard to feel that a huge opportunity hasn't just been squandered.

Sadly no Brits will be playing any further doubles TBs of any sort.

Dom & Mergea lose 2-6 7-5 6-2

One of these second set MPs was a Dom bomb to the body serve which Herbert got back superbly at Mergea at the net who couldn't control the return pace.

Bah ...
