On the broader subject of doubles, I think the brute reality is that about five players + whoever's of local interest + whoever's the latest trendy thing subsidise the whole tour. True, doubles matches don't necessarily pull in the crowds (though I think that varies from market to market - the Bryans apparently do sell tickets in the US, and I get the sense that there's greater general interest in France and the US, say, then sometimes in the UK). But then neither - as Andy Murray pointed out a few year's ago in an exchange around women's tennis - do the Stakhovskys of this world (let alone the Istomins). I'm fairly certain that the AO organisers are very anxious right now for Nadal to survive in the lower half: ticket sales and television viewing figures for a Gasquet/Thiem (say) QF (or, if I had my wishes, Gasquet/Goffin) will be fine - AO fans like their tennis! - but are not going to be the highest in the history of tennis, at a guess. But Gasquet/Thiem/Goffin are all solid top 20 players - so one can't really suggest that they haven't 'made it' or are not worth paying, just because they're not as much of a draw. Indeed no one suggests that the top 150 singles players shouldn't be able to make a living, even if many of them would be less able to fill a venue than some of the top doubles players - and I don't see why one should suggest it of the top 80 or so doubles players either.
Of course, a fair number of those top 80 doubles players are top 100 singles players anyway. And that's, at the risk of being repetitive, the point I was making earlier. Look down the list of people in the second round of doubles, and there are a lot of good singles players there who are also regular and good doubles players: Herbert, Mahut, Benneteau, Chardy, ERV, Troicki (seeded in singles), Dodig, Granollers, Melzer, Lopez (seeded in singles) ... and indeed, Querrey and Young. The issue isn't singles players playing: a lot of them do, and do it well. The issue is people teaming up at a Grand Slam for a bit of fun and taking the place of some people who do it seriously. And yes, I hear all the points you make, Indiana and Oakland, but, like Bob, I'm still bothered by it.

Apologises again, Dan does need the money as he is buying his own shirts. Very tempted to sponsor him at £19:99 a shirt with a nice claret and blue number with ACORNS emblazoned across the chest. UTV
Given that reaching the third round gets him the best part of £80K, plus about £30K from Sydney and whatever he got for the Hopman cup I really don't think he is struggling for cash, especially after earning between £250k and £300K last year. He is at the stage now where he frequently gets a decent pay check just for turning up each week.
A decent living yes, but the next few years need to set him up for life, even by professional sports standards his career is going to be a very short one in terms of optimal earnings, obviously he needs to stay fit and he's now paying for a full time coach, travel expenses, accommodation and of course tax. He is still a long way short of being financially secure and a bit of claret and blue would liven the whole tournament up, add a bit of class to the championship.

Oh I definitely understand that when you take off all the outgoings he isn't making a vast fortune at the moment but he clearly shouldn't be in a position of having to worry about not getting a few grand extra for playing in the doubles. Besides beating Tomic would land him an extra £50K so from both a tennis and a financial perspective that is where his priority lies.
I've always had a soft spot for Dom the bomb. I've always felt he's not had a fair go because of the whole Murray thing, so I'm happy for him. He's got such weapons.
