Pretty much agree with RJA. If you have night sessions this will happen. And trying to predict and specifically arrange shorter matches is a way to get egg on faces, tennis is so unpredictable.
The night session folk certainly need to be given their two matches. I've hung around for ages outside Ashe at the US Open for a night session, but would certainly not have appreciated a match being cut from that session. I recall a general acceptance that this can happen. And New York at least 'does' transport. The Australian Open venue is really pretty Melbourne central so I imagine most folk would have relatively lived with it on a Saturday night. Did the majority stay ?
Extreme cases will happen from time to time, but c'est la vie with night sessions and unpredictable length of earlier matches. The only real option I see is moving the final day match if it is starting very late and clearly going to hold back the night session, assuming that is because the day patrons have already had lots of tennis, though having paid top dollar, and maybe late on for specific matches, that would certainly not please many of them.

The most extreme case I can ever recall was in 2008 when Hewitt and Baghdatis started their match just before midnight and concluded it shortly after 4:30 and it was pretty much a full house till the very end. It was a third round match so would have been Friday or Saturday night which was obviously a factor in so many staying. In that case the day session had overran badly due to a 5 set epic between Federer and Tipsarevic that finished 10-8 in the fifth. Thus the night session did not start until around 10PM.
Yet more silly scheduling today, all I want is for one men's match to start at 00 UK time, so that I could watch a set and a half before bed, but no, we are made to suffer the shocking wta standard tennis on all courts. Women either have to be scheduled first one, or last on, this must be due to the heat and them not coping, what else??????
I would rather watch futures qualifying stream with a 10k then suffer women's tennis.

Has it ever occurred to you that the rather small midnight UK TV audience might not be their priority when it comes to scheduling?
Big shock for Andy. I have seen Misch Zverev perform like that live in Marseille, but with all due respect to Alex Ward, this was a different level of opponent.
As for Dan, he is now a break down in the 3rd set and given his recent exertions, I expect him to run out of gas and Tsonga will run away with the rest of the match. Just hope I am wrong.
Tsonga rather over-powered Dan. Serve too good, forehand brutal, backhand reasonably solid.
Dan played ok, especially to hold serve throughout the first set and win the tie-break. Careless start to the 2nd set and found it very difficult to win 2nd serve points after the opening set. Lots of dfs yet hardly any unreturned 2nd serves.
Backhand down the line worked well the few times he tried it; probably should have used it more as the slice was far too easy for Tsonga to dominate the rallies.
2nd serve return another area that was disappointing.
Yes. Didn't see either match, And congrats to Dan - he's had the most amazing tournament - that's a decent score and a decent match, by all accounts. Jo is a big tennis player, no shame there.
But Andy??? All you can say is, isn't tennis amazing? 6 months ago I was watching Mischa (for 20 mins or so) get beaten by Dan Brands in the first round of the Wimbly qualis - two big Germans going at it. His ranking was nowhere much. He was obviously pretty well-ranked a long time ago but has had years out of contention. And then gets it all together.....Amazing stuff.... But Andy...
