Estrella Burgos keeping Tomic out there, just bagged the third set against the run of play, now trails 2 sets to 1. Cant imagine Tomic won't still go through, but pretty close so far, and so nice to know Dan can sit back with his feet up letting them graft away for the right to play him!
Fast running out of superlatives to describe this guy. Evo is like a man possessed right now and it's fantastic to see. Can't wait to watch the highlights later. Two top 10 wins in a week or so and he must be absolutely brimming with confidence for the next round. I do wonder if the battle for the GB No. 2 slot and potential DC selection is adding that extra bit of motivation too.
To an extent seperate matters the GB #2 ranking and #2 Davis Cup spot unless there was a very clear rankings distinction when then I imagine that it would begin to feed in as certainly at least a factor. Feel another forum vote coming regarding Davis Cup selection post the Aussie Open ( I assume both will be in the squad ).
Whatever drives Kyle and Dan ( and as they both rise, yes, getting / keeping ahead of the other is surely some element for such competitors, however wider their ultimate aims ) it's great to see. Bring on Canada, who have a very good #1 but rather lack our depth of top 50 players

not sure if allowed to show links but that my 50 sec video of winning point.
Such a gritty performance. Cilic showed only glimpses of what he can do but so many unforced errors. Evans serve still needs work not sure of stats but first serve couldn't of been high. He did manage to break the 200 kph though which was a surprise( not to cilic though who roasted it down the line).
L64: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 defeated (Q) Andrey Rublev (RUS) WR 152 by 3, 0 & 2
L64: Dan Evans WR 51 defeated (7) Marin Cilic (CRO) WR 7 by 3-6 7-5 6-3 6-3
L64: (30) Pablo Carreņo (ESP) WR 31 (CH = 30 last November) vs Kyle Edmund WR 46
*****
L32: (1) Andy Murray WR 1 vs (31) Sam Querrey WR 32 (CH = 17 in January 2011)
Querrey has beaten Andy only once in seven encounters & that was in three sets in the final of the ATP 250 in Los Angeles in 2010!
Tomic has just despatched Estrella in three hours & 20 minutes, so
L32: (27) Bernard Tomic (AUS) WR 27 (CH = 17 last January) vs Dan Evans WR 51 (not for very much longer! )
The head-to-head there is 1-1, with Dan beating him in four sets in the last 64 of the USO in 2013 (only to fall to Robredo in four in the next round) & Tomic getting his revenge in four in the semi-final of the Davis Cup in 2015.
Dan's match was slightly shorter than Tomic's at two hours & 57 minutes.
Tomic it is then, will be very cagey contest I expect, but Dan's definitely got a chance. Tomic looked tired, I wouldn't have fancied him if he had lost fourth set, didn't look to have much more to give, whereas Dan looked sharp as a tack at end of his game, anyway Friday will be exciting.

Tomic's stamina is notoriously bad but this is the tournament where he is most likely to dig deep and really battle to the end.
Would love to see Kyle come through his match as well. When was the last time we had three British men in the 3rd round of a slam? Probably last year or something...
Surreal post-match interview about Dan's kit. Apparently he went to the store and just bought some kit for himself as Nike sponsorship deal ended in December

Yeah I should have phrased it as NO. 2, as well as DC selection. I completely agree that unless the disparity in rankings is pretty big then it will be more about court speed, match-ups etc.
What pleases me most about the win against Thiem and against Cilic is that Dan has found a way to stop the big hitters dictating the play. He can out-nouse most players at his best so it's great to see him neutralising a big serve and finding a way to really disrupt the weapons of guys who are physically at a big advantage over him. Already excited to see if Evo can sustain this sort of form over the rest of the AO and beyond.

Whoever made that decision at Nike is probably regretting right now.
Anyway, some very interesting stuff in that interview especially the comments about Mark Hilton. It sort of confirms the impression that I have of Hilton that he is more of an older brother/mentor type figure than anything else. That is ideal for Dan but I certainly think that he was terrible choice to work with Liam Broady and Luke Bambridge at such an important stage of their development.
