Osaka laboured against Kumkhum, but prevailed in 2½ hours. Given the way she can have spells were she just hit's the zone, and peaks in matches for a set or so, she'll still be dangerous.
Heather with a strong run of 5 games after a slow start, ends up taking the first set 6-3. Two aces as she served for the set. Stosur throwing in a lot of ues, especially in the games in which she was broken. Not a single bp saved in the set.

I thought Heather played well overall. At times in the 3rd set she was very impressive. She did a good job of getting returns in play throughout the match and kept her unforced error count fairly low. Sam was wildly erratic, capable of brilliant aggressive combinations then framing her next forehand the following point.

Congrats to Heather! She did indeed need this... it already shovels her up 10 places in the live ranking points from 81 to 71, a boost she needs right now....
Well done, both. You can't help but feel for Sam Stosur with her home record, but I am glad it's Ms Watson who was able to play well enough to benefit.
