Week 2 - ATP 250 - Apia International, Sydney, Australia (hard)

Evo-Evo-Evo.....

Think you said it Julia Carrot, brilliant fun to watch Dan performing at this level. His mind set from the beginning was to throttle this guy.. So much confidence now. Not seen Evo so aggressive before. Even Sauron Hilton seemed to approve.

Rooting hard for Dan to claim his first title but happy to say that he is playing someone who I also would not begrudge a Maiden ATP crown as well. I know the track record against the big servers isn't promising but Dan definitely looks to have found a new level and poor Gilles has rather let the occasion get to him in his previous finals. Everything crossed.

Certainly a tough task but Evo seems (from highlights) to have returned pretty well this week. That said if he can keep his own serve ticking over then you'd hope he can take a chance when one presents itself. Just has to keep his head up if Gilles is battering down the aces.

What a fabulous week for Dan and another match to come. It is so pleasing to see these performances and the success it is bringing. I watched Dan play live in Brussels many years ago. It was such a disappointing match lacking in effort and appropriate behaviour and it was embarrassing to be there supporting him. What a joy now to see such a change since then. Congratulations Dan for the turnaround you have made in the past few years. Here's to even more success this year - good luck in the final.

If Dan wins the final we will go into the Aussie Open with both the men's and women's race leaders.

The other week 1 and week 2 ATP 250 title winners would have 'just' these 250 points. Dan would have an additional 7 from his November Knoxville Challenger R2, and lead by himself on 257 points.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow it is really good to see Dan start the season in such emphatic fashion. Last year was such a good year for him that there was always a danger that he wouldn't be able to either push on or even match it. Plenty of guys get to around 50 in the world largely with wins on the challenger level and then find that they can't maintain their ranking when they are playing on the main tour week in week out. Obviously that could still happen to Dan but this week has been a terrific indicator that it will not.
