Cam wins 6-4, 6-2 in a match that was closer than the score indicated. Cam got a break in the very first game and then each player held serve throughout the first set and Cam took it 6-4. The 2nd set was close, but Cam got a key break at 2-all and then cruised on in with two breaks total. Next up will (presumably) be Finn Tearney, who was born in Auckland but lives in Wellington, who initially got a bye but a wild card opponent was added late. Tearney is 26, has WAY more experience, but is only ranked at #494, with a CH of #396. I would have thought that Finn would have been favored but maybe not. Tomorrow night, don't know yet what time.
As far as I can see the drawsheet was actually always showing Tearney and four others as playing "Alternate"s in the first qualifying round rather than having byes. Only latterly were names put to these Alternates. They seemed determined to have a full draw.
If there were actually byes these should go to the seeds in order so Tearney wouldn't get a bye before Cam.
Some of the alternates are specialist doubles players and Tearney is down to play 36 yo top doubles player Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi. I see from the ITF site that Qureshi does actually have a singles CH 125 dating back to 2007.
Qureshi wasn't a bad singles player. Has continued (until 2016 at least) to play singles for Pakistan in DC (as does Huey for the Philippines, as do Statham and Tearney for NZ, etc)
Now in the FQR that does look a match that Cam should see as a great opportunity to make the main draw. Tearney is experienced yes but there is little in his record to suggest that Cam should not be a fairly firm favourite. They did meet in qualifying for the Winnipeg Challenger last July when Cam came from a slow start to win 1-6 6-1 7-6(4 ) so tight then but Cam is the guy much more on the ascent.
Much tougher looking for Brydan and it looks like it would be a very good win to beat Diez.
Brydan is due first on with play starting at noon, 11 pm GMT. Cam is 2nd on his court with again proceedings starting there at 11 pm GMT.
