Those of us who have spent longer on this board than we care to recall will also remember him as a top-100 junior. Alas, Wiersholm is also a very good player, currently at the University of Virginia, so not a great draw.

I wonder why Joe didn't enter the singles. It looks as if he would have just missed the main draw but could have come through qualifying.

Unless he is feeling his way back from some injury ?

Whatever the cause of the focus, that's a partnership that could be interesting. All the best to them.

Yes, it is. But the two competitive sets bode well. Hanfmann is good, and while he is listed as German, he spent his student years at the University of Southern California ... which is where this tournament is being played. So it was a fairly rotten match-up. Hanfmann and Quiroz, who won multiple awards together as a doubles team, are - fortunately! - in the opposite half to Messrs Bambridge and Salisbury.

Better news in the doubles:

L16:  (1) Luke Bambridge & Joe Salisbury CR 536 (218+318) defeated Jonathan Mridha & Carl Söderlund (SWE/SWE) CR 3223 (1670+1553) by 4 & 4

*****

QF:  (1) Luke Bambridge & Joe Salisbury CR 536 (218+318) vs Dekel Bar & Nathaniel Lammons (ISR/USA) CR 1343 (729+614)
