With all of FrogNation behind him and good vibes from his Scottish and British fans, Cameron Norrie scored one of the biggest upsets of his career today by beating much-higher-rated #3 seeded Duckhee Lee 6-4, 6-4 in New Caledonia!! Next up will be Alejandro Falla, who Cam will be facing tonight (along with Hernandez-Fernandez) in doubles. Frog fans formerly viewed NZL Davis Cup player Jose Statham as a villain (because Alex Rybakov played him at Pensacola), but now we're in his corner because he's partnering with his fellow Kiwi (er, British citizen). Cam had 3 aces, and broke Lee 5 times en route to the 2nd round. Falla is ranked #273, so it'll be an even match, but Cam's playing some of the best tennis of his life.

After an amazingly close first set (7-6 (9-7)), Cam and Jose Statham cruise through the 2nd set 6-1, with three service breaks and a first serving % of 88% to advance to the quarterfinals against the top-seeded French team. Just like singles, Cam gets a W against a much higher rated team and plays great tennis!!
A good day indeed. I genuinely wasn't sure (as above) how this one would go. Duck-hee Lee (or Lee Duck-hee) is one of the players I'd really like to see do well, so I've followed his results and caught a few games from his matches on the Challenger stream. I think he's slightly overranked at present - picked up points at weaker Challengers - though with lots of potential. And (like everyone else) I think Mr Norrie is underranked. But it's always hard to know how players will match up and how they'll do at the start of a new year. Very nice on the doubles for the new partnership.
Great results, this is the level he is at now challengers/GS Qualifiers the more regular the exposure the better the opportunity to learn and progress.
Alejandro Falla will be especially tough for Cameron to beat. Falla, 33, from Colombia, is a veteran ATP World player whose CH is 48 (in 2012). He's played singles and doubles at all 4 Slams - his best result was making the 4th round at the French in 2011. He's beaten Juan Martin del Potro, Nikolai Davydenko and Justin Gimelstob, among many others. As readers of this forum undoubtedly know, he caused a sensation in 2010 at Wimbledon by taking the first two sets from Roger Federer - the defending champ - and was serving for the match at 5-4 in the 3rd before Roger mounted a stunning comeback. He's wily and can beat anyone - especially a college player from lil ole TCU. He's slipped to ATP #273 and appears to be on the downslope of a fairly impressive long career. This is just the sort of player that a rising new star needs to beat!
