RE: Week 1 - WTA International ($250K) - Auckland, New Zealand - Hard

Heather I'm sure is looking for a coach but maybe finding it hard to get a good one with her slide in rankings last year.  As for Laura I guess it depends whether she is still heavily funded by the LTA.  She has hardly earned any money on court (although clearly still has various sponsorship deals) for 2 or 3 years now so may not be able to afford one off her own bat.  My understanding is that she has recently moved into the JTC group alongside Freya, Harriet and Katie B.  I don't know whether they send coaches out to tournaments with any of their players but would suspect if they can get a group playing a similar schedule that they would supply coach support.  Imagine that is what happened in the recent US run involving that group of girls.

Just circling back on this - I found this article from September in The Guardian. Did this just not work out and I missed it?

Interested to know what Naomi is doing for coaching now. I see from the Shenzhen thread that Fitzy has landed with Jo which is good news for both I think. I am sure Naomi had her reasons for ending the partnership but I hope she is working with someone who can help her stick in the top 100 and maybe kick on.

Naomi's first serve not finding the target yet she holds to love 1-0*

After lots of errors the score is 40-40. Naomi then earns 3 bps. Wastes decent chances on two of them before DK holds 1-1

Another ugly game. Naomi saves 2 bps but her unreliable forehand ultimately costs her a break 1-2*

Comfortable DK hold *1-3

Naomi starts with a shocking volley error that most of us would have been ashamed by, DK with a couple of b ues and 2 unreturned Broady serves make it 2-3*

Naomi's forehand still can't find the court *2-4

Naomi looks comfortable at 40-15 then her first serve goes missing and two terrible b errors give away her serve 2-5*

Danka's ground-strokes land long again and again, saves a bp with an ace then another f error long and a df to gift Naomi a break *3-5

Naomi holds to love 4-5*

Better play from Broady now. Four times Naomi gets bp only to see it saved, one awful error, but on her 5th attempt she attacks the net then watches DK's backhand passing shot land wide 5-5

Naomi holds to 30, a rare aggressive Broady backhand down the line 6-5*

DK good play holds to 15 6-6

Tiebreak:

Naomi misses her first serve and sees her 2nd punished by a deep return that she can't deal with 0-1*

Dk easy f winner after her 1st serve 0-2*

Naomi f ue *0-3

Repeat *0-4

Unreturned Broady 1st serve 1-4*

Super Naomi forehand dtl 2-4*

DK smash winner after Naomi's drop shot then lob combination lacks sufficient quality *2-5

Ace *3-5

DK f ue 4-5

DK b cc clips net goes wide 5-5

Naomi's sliced return falls short and keeps low, making life difficult for Danka, who pushes her forehand long 6-5

Danka f ue long 7-5 (that was one ugly set of tennis but respect to Naomi for continuing to compete hard)

Fortunately Kovinic's 1st service percentage has dropped from over 80% to 65% allowing Naomi to get back from 2-5* to *5-5

Naomi took the 1st set 7-6(5) after being down 2-5 in games and then down 0-3 in the tie break.

Naomi has bp 2nd serve only to completely miss-hit her return out of play *0-1

Two terrible shots from Naomi, one b, one f, get her in trouble, she saves one bp thanks to Danka's b ue but DK's smash earns the break 0-2*

Decent play from Danka to hold to 30 *0-3

Super serving from Naomi as she recovers from 0-30 1-3*

Danka up 40-0 repeats the same error 3 times in a row, forehand immediately after her serve, then sees Naomi play her best point of the match, recovering smashes then firing a b pass winner, and a Broady drop shot gets the break *2-3

Naomi saves bp with a big first serve then more good serving allows her to hold 3-3

Ugly game full of shocking Naomi errors yet she keeps fighting and ultimately pulls out a super forehand winner to set up bp and DK's forehand ue helps her to another break *4-3

It looks like Naomi is intent on throwing it away as a horrible drop shot that just about reaches the net, and a df, make it 0-30 but her first serve gets her out of trouble 5-3*

A lucky Broady return winner, then a superb lob winner, Danka's f ue sets up 3 match points. All saved. 2 with good 1st serves. Then an awful backhand error from DK and finally a Naomi drop shot that Danka can only push wide 6-3

Naomi has a knack of throwing in some junk and make her opponent play absolutely useless.

That's as good an explanation as I can think of. Having watched the whole match, I'm still utterly bewildered by what just happened. I might add that the wind probably had something to do with it.

Will play last year's finalist Julia Goerges in the second round later tonight. Should be a step up.

It is a complete mystery to me why Naomi opts to run around her backhand in order to hit a forehand when she possesses the most unreliable forehand in the top 100 and is probably a strong contender for the worst mover too. Please Naomi, if the ball lands on the backhand side of the court, hit a backhand.
