I don't think Sam was the top seed. He was pretty lowly ranked even at acceptance time. I think he must have got that top slot because of a re-jigging of the draw after a withdrawal.

But both our boys lost to lower ranked players.... cry

You're right, he wasn't.  Because his name was in the top spot, I just assumed, I didn't look!    I've edited my original post.

Ah not so good. And yes seedings ( both qualifying and main draw ) are anyway based on rankings the previous Monday irrespective of players' positions on entry lists ( which basically just order who actually gets into the main draw and qualifying ).
