Boys & Girls: Nike Junior International, Liverpool (@Wirral), Hard - Grade 5 (Week 47)

Qualifying has started and I was down there today at Wirral.

I have to say the standard in qualifying is getting higher and higher each year and there was some terrific talent on show.

Indianna Spink - just 14, but far too good for the two girls she played against. Big serve, very clean powerful forehand and looks a real talent. Young Tiana Fox gave her a bit of a challenge in the second set, but couldn't live with the power or accuracy.

Katherine Barnes came through qualifying after she got a walkover from Bronte Murgett, who injured her hip and the cruised past Alex Topalovic. Katherine is just 15 from Norfolk and in her first ITF tournament and I was impressed by her depth, accuracy and consistency.

Annali Olivelle - keep an eye on this girl, 14yr old very small, but can't half play. Took out Alisha Reayer and a girl from Kim Clijsters Academy.

Alice Thane came through quite easily. She is slightly older and more experienced. Off the others impressed by young Lily Hutchings, who won the TE event last week and pushed Alex, but just lacked a bit of weight of shot.

On the boys side:

George Hutchings qualified, he took out the top seed and then young Toby Samuel. George is all power and looks a good player when it all comes together. The match against Tom Thelwall Jones was really tight, but ran away against Toby. As for Toby. This was his first tournament at ITF level, having been a top player at TE. All I will say it will be very hard for 14yrs to transit quickly to ITF as they just don't have the power and speed to compete effectively yet against the better players. Having said that, Toby has heaps of talent and won a real battle against a much older boy earlier in the day.

Matthew Carroll - looked very classy. Having said that Bronte Murgett's little brother gave him a decent match and looked a very god player.

Pierce Widdecombe also looked very useful.

The future looks bright on both the boys and girls side

Really interesting read, paulisi, many thanks.

And so pleased you managed to get there - hadn't they changed the venue or something and you weren't sure you'd be able to?

Interested to hear re Katharine Barnes, who made the semis in last week's Britihs Tour event, out of qualifiers too.

And your report about Annali Olivelle who seems to be very highly rated by the LTA.

Do you think you'll be able to make it there again?

I'm there on Wednesday for QFs. Brought forward schedule due to county cups.

It was at Wavertree, but has moved to Wirral mainly due to better facilities(probably cheaper), even though Liverpool council have spent a fortune on Wavertree.

Round one completed today with wildcard James Story upsetting the French third seed, whlle George Hutchings (mentioned in Paulisi's report) carried on by comfortably beating the Hungarian fourth seed, while wildcard Jacob Fearnley easily beat the French seventh seed. On the girls side Indianna comfortably won the aforementioned clash, while there were seeding upsets for Millie Devey Smith and Mae McCutcheon. Annali Olivelle progressed comfortably

Peter Alam, who was RU last week at the TE event, came through to win at this level for the first time.

The other lad that I picked out, Matthew Carroll came through nicely.

In the girls, Annali Olivelle came through comfortably and wins for Mae McCutcheon and Millie Devey-Smith over seeds.

Young Jacob Fearnley (born 2001), with a wildcard, has made the quarters. I've heard a fair bit about this lad but never seen him play. Maybe you could throw an eye that way if you get down there tomorrow, paulisi?

Your George Hutchings also won nicely. Top seeds, Hamish and Adam, are through no trouble. And Andrew Rozanov (5) and James Story (WC). Matt Carroll and Brad Buckland lost out

2nd Round

Hamish STEWART (GBR) [1] 6-3 6-2 Mark KEKI (HUN)
Lorenzo MUSETTI (ITA) [6] 7-5 6-1 Matthew CARROLL (GBR)
James STORY (GBR) 6-7(5) 6-1 6-4 Romeo MIDTGAARD JIVRAJ (DEN)
Andrew ROZANOV (GBR) [5] 6-3 6-0 Sebastian HARRIS (GBR)
Allan DESCHAMPS (FRA) [8] 6-2 6-1 Bradley BUCKLAND (GBR)
George HUTCHINGS (GBR) 6-7(5) 6-4 6-2 Peter ALAM (GBR)
Jacob FEARNLEY (GBR) 6-4 6-2 Matei Adrian GEORGESCU (ROU)
Adam JONES (GBR) [2] 6-3 7-5 Sebastian TONG (GBR)

Great win by Destinee Martins in the girls, beating the number two seed in a third-set tie-break. Young Annali more than met her match with Hannah McC, which is no surprise. Some other decent looking matches. Morgan Cross is on a very good run. The result of Vicki Allen against the third seed from Ireland is not yet up.

2nd Round

Esther ADESHINA (GBR) [1] 6-2 6-1 Alessia Beatrice CIUCA (ROU)
Summer YARDLEY (GBR) 6-1 6-3 Millie DEVEY SMITH (GBR)
Mae MCCUTCHEON (GBR) 6-4 6-3 Indianna SPINK (GBR)
Morgan CROSS (GBR) [6] 6-2 1-6 6-4 Tiegan AITKEN (GBR)
Hannah MCCOLGAN (GBR) [7] 6-0 6-2 Annali OLIVELLE (GBR)
Olivia PEET (GBR) 6-3 7-5 Holly STAFF (GBR)
Destinee MARTINS (GBR) 6-4 4-6 7-6(2) Yasmina KARIMJANOVA (UZB) [2]

I've seen five of the girls play before and just George Hutchings of the boys, so will try and keep my eye on the boys.

Hannah Mc is under ranked at juniors and should win the tournament, but Vic Allen will be her biggest test. Should be game of the day.
