Boys & Girls: Abierto Juvenil Mexicano, clay - Grade A (Week 46)

The start of the North American autumn swing, with 3 decent draws and 1 awful one - Barnaby Smith having to play the JWR2 who has reached the final of his last 3 G1/GA events, including the US Open. Barnaby doesn't play until tomorrow, but Finn is on after the current match on his court, and the two girls later this evening, with live scores available at http://www.tennisticker.de/mex/sb.html?tournid=2931  Jodie Burrage plays her first ITF match since July

Boys R1 (L64)

(1/WC) Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) v Barnaby Smith

(15) Finn Bass v Karl Friberg (SWE)

Girls R1 (L64)

Layne Sleeth (CAN) v (5) Jodie Anna Burrage

(7) Emily Appleton v Katya Townsend (USA)

Good to see Jodie again. I did see that she was on the entry list for at least one of the home 10Ks but withdrew.

Layne Sleeth only turned 15 this summer and won some grade 4 s as a 14 year old, hopefully Jodie will be too strong for her but Layne is on a steep improvement curve stepping up to grade A. Katya (16) is slightly stronger than her twin and in no way related to Taylor , I can't see her beating Emily.

Good luck to the both and of course Barnaby tomorrow

The tradition of going all out to get the year-end no 1 junior ranking continues! Pity about the draw for Barnaby Smith and the early loss for Finn Bass.

Oakie was right and Emily took care of business, beating Katya Taylor. Unofrtunately, Jodie didn't quite make it but it looks like a close match and not bad for her first one in ages:

Girls R1 (L64)

Layne Sleeth (CAN) def. (5) Jodie Anna Burrage 3-6 7-5 6-4

(7) Emily Appleton def. Katya Townsend (USA) 6-1 6-2

Unsurprisingly Barnaby lost - judging from Twitter it looks like the match was streamed so may be available somewhere but I haven't time to check

Boys R1 (L64)

(1/WC) Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) d. Barnaby Smith 6-4 6-2

Girls R2

(7) Emily Appleton v Paula Baranaro (ARG)

Emily should be on shortly, but on a court which doesn't appear in the live scores. In doubles she has teamed up again with Anastasia Potapova as top seeds

Rain restricted Emily to doubles yesterday (where she and Anastasia reached the quarters) but Emily didn't waste time today over her singles. Natasha Subhash is her likely round 3 opponent - scheduled for later today

Girls R2

(7) Emily Appleton d. Paula Baranaro (ARG) 6-3 6-1

You weren't wrong, Oakie, to be worried - but Emily App came through !

Emily found a more experienced American seed too tough today, but returns later to play doubles. Finn has also reached the doubles quarter finals with American Trent Bryde

Girls QF

(4) Claire Liu (USA) d. (7) Emily Appleton 6-3 6-4

Emily and partner lost in the quarters. Finn & partner did win one further round but lost out in the semis. Both doubles finals are American dominated, as is the girls semis (4 US headed by Anisimova and Liu) but the boys semis is American free - Kecmanovic is still in

An interesting tweet from the tournament itself notes that Emily Appleton's father Michael was the first tournament champion (1977): twitter.com/AJuvenilMex/status/799677761346359296
