Poor Brian Baker, just back from long term injury recently suffered a very bad looking hip injury in his QF and had to retire
I do feel sorry for him but at the same time it's typical that it happens in the match after he beats Liam and not during. I think Liam would have appreciated that slice of luck to round out his season.
Full sympathy for Brian Baker. Liam's own level of play sets his own destiny. Being gifted an extra round in a Challenger here or there is ultimately of no consequence for him. I wish good health for Brian and good form for Liam.
Is this a first final at challenger Doubles for both of them?
It's Liam's second doubles challenger final and third challenger final including his singles one. His other doubles challenger final was with Guilherme Clezar (BRA) in Binghamton in July, lost to Reid & Smith (AUS/AUS), though they did 'win' their SF by a walkover so first doubles challenger SF 'properly' won.
It's Luke's first challenger final singles or doubles.
Great news with the doubles. I haven't see Luke play much but his results do suggest that if he does not make much headway in singles over the next year or two a potentially very good doubles career could be had.
With you, Indie and skibarriz, on Brian Baker - and wishing him all the best.
Madadman, checking the ATP website, it seems to be the first Challenger final for Luke Bambridge and the second for Liam Broady (1st was Binghamton this year with Guilherme Clezar, lost to Matthew Reid and JP Smith). Excellent for both. I'd be (more than slightly) surprised if they don't face Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren in the finals, but the other SF has yet to be played. The GB pair has done well to come through the bottom half which was much harder than the top half. I think this more than covers the remaining points Luke Bambridge had coming off this year, and Liam Broady has no points to defend for the rest of the year. So both in quite a good place.
Edit: Snap!

Will already be a doubles CH for Luke, probably in the 220s. And he will be GB #8 behind the 'big 6' and Brydan.
As Spectator says this more than covers his remaining points this year, indeed until February ( after this week 30 points in total from 3 successive Qatar futures runners-up ).
