Week 46 - Cyprus F1 ($10,000) - Nicosia (hard)

There have been some impressive strides forwards by our 18 year olds over the last few weeks. Joel, Ali G and Jay have really made up sit up and take notice. If they can take this form into a full season next year, we may be in for some exciting times.

Well done Joel today.

Joel + putting up a decent effort in the doubles as well against the top seeds. Lost the first set on a breaker though and currently 5-5 in the 2nd.

In the end, the top seeds take the match 7-6(3) 7-5

So Joel's singles QF is the only GB interest left in Cyprus this week.

Don't know if Bob is up and about in Bob-land, but Joel has just taken the first set, 7-6(6), against the third seed

Bob has just woken up in "Bob-land" to find Salman at match point in the 3rd, which he took.

Decent effort from Joel but he loses 6-7(6) 6-4 6-3

Another solid week though and 2 more points to his tally.

This would appear to be something of a 'gap term' for Alastair Gray, who's been announced as going to Texas Christian University as of January. Interesting. If he, Mr Norrie and Alex Rybakov are all there this spring, together with their other ranked players, that's quite a team.

Well that is exciting for Ali, hopefully the coaching team at TCU will remain stable as they have served Cam well by all accounts, although I feel it is time for him to playing challenger tennis with a view to getting into GS qualifiers.

I don't know how much college coaching support there is for elite college players when they step out and play futures or challenger tour, my feeling is unless it's on your own campus you are left to get on with it. I have only attended a couple of such events but my impression was the college plays were in the local "Days Inn" scoffed the poor quality complimentary breakfast grabbed their kit bag turned up good to go but with the feeling it was extra curricula as opposed to part of their development.

However if it is intensive i.e. there is coaching support and well thought out with a focus on individual development it may be worth staying, there may be specific aspects of his game that he really wants to work on and sort out for the long term and the stability and resources available at TCU allow one to do that. Could you put any winnings NHS above the 10K allowed back into funding college coaches flights accommodation food etc??? I don't know the NCAA rules are a minefield
