(*) I've been dying for one of our chaps to play this character so that I could ask whether his parents are aware that lance-pierre(s) means "catapult" in French!
It's interesting. du Toit is quite a common South African name (eg the swimmer Natalie du Toit) While it may indicate Huguenot ancestry, I don't think it necessarily implies any particular familiarity with French as a general rule, much as here you often get French surnames in families that have no remaining contact with French culture. But I'd agree that the combination of first and last names suggests that someone does indeed know what they were doing ... and has a sense of humour. Not sure how I'd feel about it if I were their son, though!
For Spec and SC, in particular, I've just seen that there is a 16 year-old wildcard in the women's event here who is called Evangeline du Toit.
I assumed that she may well be the sister of Lance-Pierre (who is 17) and that the family had the 'he who catapults from the roof' and the 'she who brings good news from the roof'
And then saw there's a Daniel du Toit (also 17, although a month different in age so no relation to Lance-Pierre but maybe Evangeline, or not)...
So have now decided that, as Spec, implies, practically the whole of South Africa is called du Toit .....
Meanwhile, and more importantly (!), James has taken the second set in a tie-break.
